Humpback whales under the boat in BC

While running between salmon fishing spots off Hernando Island in BC last week we had this encounter with two humpback whales. The clicking you here (and a couple other weird sounds) on the audio is the whales and not wind on the GoPro.

Re: Buy Barbed or Barbless for salmon

2018 is the year I go all barbless. Just swapped out all of my trout gear with proper barbless and rigged all my salmon gear with barbless Gamakatsu's as well. Use to crimp barbs but started to wonder why I was even bothering when the hooks I needed were manufactured barbless for me. I found that my...

Re: Pen-Tac B.C. Steel Spoons: Where are they?

Thanks for scouting them out for me fellas. I'll try and make a trip up to Everett and see if I can snag some. OE and Sportco stopped carrying them because of the cost/lack of profit on selling them., Peduncle you said that you're buying them bulk from "Sara at Pentac"? I suppose this means they're ...

Re: Pen-Tac B.C. Steel Spoons: Where are they?

Cabela's only has the 1/4 oz. ones on their site. If anyone's seen the 2/5oz. 50/50s in person I'll head up there. Thanks for looking out!

Pen-Tac B.C. Steel Spoons: Where are they?

I've fished these spoons for years and they are starting to get really hard to find. Has anyone seen these in local, Puget Sound-area shops? My local shop stopped carrying them because of their price. My buddy and I call them the "$10 spoon", which is true, but they are unmatched in my mind in regar...

Re: Humpy spoons

I bought a bunch of those 12th Man SIlver Horde trolling spoons a couple years back for stocking stuffers and they've caught some kings up in Canada for me every season since. They're not my "go-to", but if the fishing is good I'll tie one on and they'll catch fish. Blue, green, and silver all toget...

Skykomish Shuttle?

Is there a reliable shuttle service that runs on the Sky that anyone has used recently. I know there were some older posts stating that there was someone that did it...but I need to know if someone here in 2017 is running shuttles? I normally takeout at Ben Howard, but am flexible. They got Uber in ...

Re: Good King County Summer Fisheries

Not King County but Lost Lake, which is to the west of Keechelus, is a deep and cold lake that I've caught August & September trout in. There isn't a lot of bank access so it is better with an inflatable, but I've caught big, stocked rainbows in there and there are Kokanee and brookies as well. The ...

Re: Skykomish High Bridge to Sultan? Safe in a pontoon?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll re-watch that video before we head out tomorrow Mike. Thanks for filming/posting that! Your videos have been very helpful for us in the past. We're definitely a "safety first" crew and will be sure to walk our toons down anything that seems too sketchy. The river sh...

Skykomish High Bridge to Sultan? Safe in a pontoon?

A buddy and I are considering launching our pontoons at High Bridge and need to know if it's safe. We've got years of experience pontoon fishing lower on the river (Sultan to Ben Howard, etc) but have never put in at High Bridge. Anything dicey we should be aware of in what will probably be lower fl...

Re: Pt. Wilson Darts Question: Swivel on the Hook?

Thanks guys. I've never seen that rigging before and will try it once I'm home and closer to where I can pick up some of the materials. For now...I'll throw some swivels on there. Wish me luck. "Springs" are being caught all over up here where I am in BC. In past years I've lost at least a couple ea...

Pt. Wilson Darts Question: Swivel on the Hook?

I'm setting down to rig up my salmon jigs and noticed in the tackle box that I "share" with my Dad that he added a swivel to the split ring before putting the hook on. I understand what he's trying to do, which is minimize the opportunity for a fish to get leverage on the hook and break off, but it ...

Metallic red or bronze Mepps aglia spinners in a size 1 or 0 are my standby for any creek or river fishing I may be doing for trout.

Re: Year round lakes??

I fished Munn Lake in Thurston County last weekend for the first time and had some luck. Selective gear but very manageable in my pontoon. I got a late start and was on the water by noon, but the bite didn't pick up until around 2:30pm. I caught some nice-sized planted cutts and a big holdover rainb...

Re: BC Rivers

You're lucky to get to vacation on Quadra Island. I fish all up and down the inside passage in the summer and can send you some hotspots if you have a boat that you can take out in the salt. Salmon and ling fishing are awesome up there...and don't forget about spot prawns, clams, crabs, and oysters ...

Garmin Handheld GPS

There's been a couple of other discussions about handheld GPS units, but with the holidays and a few years passing since the last posts, I wanted to see if anyone had a newer unit that they liked. I'm looking into the Garmin Oregon 600 as it has a touchscreen camera, and seems tough enough for the h...

Re: BC Rivers

I spend my summers up in the Desolation Sound area (north of Powell River) and have fished the salt water up there nearly my whole life. The Campbell River Tyee Club is on my bucket list and that river has incredibly healthy runs of salmon. Let me know if you get into any salt water fishing and need...

Re: Wallace River Access?

I've parked at the convenience store and asked the clerk if I could leave my truck in the lot behind the store, which he did allow. I then hiked below the bridge and waded down the river. He was pretty gracious with it but I'd definitely ask first.

Re: Weight Size To Float Size

When I switched float brands I busted out a kitchen scale and starting measuring out the split shot, leader, jig, and inline weight to match the float ratings. I wanted to rig up at home and not wait til I was on the water trying different things until I found out what worked. You shouldn't have to ...
