Hi,
We are going to be in Mazama for the first two weeks of August. I am going out fly fishing with a guide one day but am also looking for shore-based fishing ideas suitable for an 8-year-old. The requirements are
- In the Mazama / Winthrop area
- Easy access from shore (or somewhere we can rent a boat)
- Not technical / low skill (still fishing or very basic casting (not fly)
- Ideally it would be "bait and wait" or trolling if we can get a boat
We fished the dock at Patterson Lake last year and caught a bunch of sunfish. That was fun but I'd like to find another option as well, maybe something where we could catch a trout.
Any ideas on where to fish, appropriate tackle / approach?
Thanks

Re: Winthrop area lake fishing with an 8 YO
You could try Pearrygin lake, lots of shore access along the park side, and you can hike around. There is a little resort there that may rent boats as well. I had success last year with a dick night and my buddies did better drifting along with Wholly Buggers. There is also Big twin lake (selective gear though) and they rent boats. Most people flyfish, but caught a nice trout rowing along with a dick night and small dodger (same gear as Pearrygin). Look up previous reports from Pearrygin to get more ideas of gear.
