Seattle Times article; too many Seals and Sea Lions

I hope this link works. Orcas are in danger because Seal and Sea Lion populations are booming and taking too many salmon.

For those interested in some light reading, here is the "Study" mentioned in the article above. The Study makes it clear that furbags are having a dire impact on Chinook stocks. Nothing we didn't already know but the existence of a serous scientific study makes it abundantly clear.

How about a new motto:

SAVE THE WHALES!
PUT A BOUNTY ON FURBAGS!

I hear seal meat is similar to venison. I'd be down for some seal fishing! .....then i'd HAVE to buy a bigger rod. "Save the Whales!"

The interesting take on this article is that rather than look at things scientifically many people in the Puget Sound region need to have "their hearts tugged" in order for them to consider the right actions to correct problems. A few years ago sealions were considered majestic and cool by the casual beach walker and the idea of thinning the herd would have been heresy. Now if articles come out like this the orcas are higher on the uninformed's "protect at all costs"emotional index - maybe we'll actually get some meaningful action on controlling these out of control sealion populations.

Couldn't have said that any better, Well said.

When it comes down to it, those darn seals can just do that "sad puppy dog look" way better than most of us fisherman can.
