WA Fish Quest Episode 1: Black Rockfish

Post by Fish-or-man? » Sat Mar 31, 2012 7:32 am

Hi all!

I shot my first fishing video. It's a buddy an I fishing off the South Jetty at Westport. I'm going to do a monthly series where I target a different fish species every month, and cannot go after the same fish twice as the main target. I played it relatively safe in episode one and tageted black rockfish. :pirat: Washington has such diversity amoung fish species this show sohuld keep me busy for years!

The next one will be in widescreen!

That was thoroughly enjoyable! Nicely shot video. Curious what vid. cam. did you use? Thanks for sharing the various jigs that you used.
I go out to the coast quite a bit, but I am usually in the Moclips area. Can you recommend a cheap motel that has a kitchenette area where you can cook up your catch while staying? You mentioned your "Cajun stir fry" or something. When I stay in Moclips that is what I usually do, is stay at some roadside motel with a kitchen, and cook up my surf perch.

Also when fishing from the jetty like that, do you expect to lose a ton of jigs to snags from jetty rocks that are out within your casting area? Can't wait for the next video. Hope you do a surf perch one. :fish:

Thank you very much for the kind words Quadfather! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

I have a 5 or 6 year old handy cam. Runs on the little tapes-- if it had that tape-like quality that's why. :)

I like to stay at the Alaskan, which is located on the edge of town. A really nice older couple with a cool dog owns it. I think it was $68 a night (before tax) last time. Two beds, good shower, and a kitchenette: two burners, mini-fridge, pots/pans, and silverware. Does the job for me! It's near the Red Apple Market, the only big store in town-- you can get all the ingredients for a nice dinner there. There's a lot of good little places to stay though. If it isn't a razor clam tide weekend and the salmon aren't in you can usually shop around for a good deal.

There are a lot of snags out there! The bottomfish like the structure though, so I like to fish in areas with a medium amount of snags, that I kind of know where they are (from losing a couple jigs). Come well stoked; you'll probably go through quite a few.

I'll do a surf perch one for sure!-- probably in the fall. I'm suprised there aren't more surf perch addicts like us; they sure are fun on the end of the line! (and later at the end of a fork!)

I noticed Fin's breaking the water during your first cast. What was that? Something waiting for you to catch it dinner? LOL

Great eye! At 1:19 and 1:24 that is a dolphin breaking water! I'm not sure what kind, but I am pretty sure that same dolphin has been hanging around the jetty for at least 10 years. I see him/her out there about every third trip.

Thanks a ton Knota and Nimmum! I'm really glad you liked the video! Knota, black rockfish are actually my favorite eating fish! (they were my grandpa's favorite too-- must be a genetic thing!)
