Thai Fishing Lures

Post by MrLucky » Sat Apr 04, 2009 8:50 am

Hello, Washington Lakers. I'm a forum newbie, recently returned to my hometown of Bellingham after some years overseas.

I used to fish the waters of Whatcom county as a kid and, now that I'm in my 40's, I figure it's time for a second childhood. So, I've been poling around my old haunts this past year, pulling in a few trout, but also very interested in hooking some bass.

Anyway, show and tell time: here's some pics of the hand-painted lures they like to fish with in Thailand. I might try them out on Lake Terrell and see what Washington bass think of them.

Cool looking lures.
I wonder if they would keep the birds away if I wore one on the bill of my fishing hat. :jocolor:

Bragging may not bring happiness, but no man having caught a large fish goes home through an alley.

This is a very interesting thread topic. I am curious what fishing lures from overseas countries look like.
Please let us know how you do. Since the waters are still a little cool,, don't be discouraged if nothing happens, but go back again as it warms up.

If I was a bass and saw one of those swimming toward me, I'd think the WDFW had dropped acid in the pond :-"

Ha ha ha ha ha!! Nice one!

Of course I plan to drop these in front of a few Washington bass....I'll let you know if I get a reaction.

In Thailand these lures are used by Bangkok sports fisherman for all sorts of big tropical carnivores but, upcountry, where subsistence fishing is more the norm, they use the lure that looks like a spring (or just throw in a net).

My nephew (in the picture) is using a tin can wound with line, which he uses just like a spinning reel (hold it vertically to "cast", horizontally to reel in). He squeezes a ball of dough mixed with shrimp onto the spring, which has a few little lines with hooks that he embeds in the dough ball. Then he throws the bait into the pond and hangs the line over the tip of a convenient branch (in lieu of a rod), and waits for a bite. Sometimes there is a feeding frenzy and he can pull out two or three fish at once. He did much better than me, and probably thought my whole fishing rod, reel, lure set-up was hilarious.
