Fishing tackle-airplanes??
Fishing tackle-airplanes??
I have a few odd ends of tackle I'm bringing back on the plane tomorrow. Can I pack them in my carry-on or is that illegal? I have a few hooks, crankbaits and soft plastics...Might just pack them in my luggage and be safe....Anyone have an answer?

I would look on line the airline should have a list but I don't think it would be a problem:cheers:Sam Kafelafish wrote:I have a few odd ends of tackle I'm bringing back on the plane tomorrow. My guess is anything with metal in it will get a you a search and the hooks will get tossed...I mean hey, you could get close enough to use it to pietce the captains ear while he was flying right?...In all serousness I would pack it all in your checked bag to be safe. would really hate to have you post "I would have made my flight if they hadn't strip searched me for that Kastmaster"

When I was flying over to seattle for a client my wire strippers were taken due too the length, not because they could hurt anybody. I was told by the security officer that when travling it was best to check all "non-needed" items instead of a carry-on. Not really fishing gear but I feel with the security as high that it is it would be best to put all that type of stuff in your checked, you would hate to lose something just because of it might be weapon.

I figure I'll just stick it in checked...I just hope they don't search it for 30 minutes and not get my baggage on the plane...
Alaska Airlines used to be cool bring tackle in carry on, when we used to go up North to Alaska or Canada...That was a few years ago, figure I'll play it safe and throw it in checked. Thanks for the replies fellas!

Just make sure to dump out your water bottle. They aren't amused when you say "it's just water... here I'll drink it really quick"

I flew to and from New Zealand hand carrying all my fishing gear. They just scan it and ask questions if they have any. Call the airlines and check.
Just don't try to carry on your filleting knife.

Sam, I think the airlines go with the "Selective fisheries" regulations.... just carry single hooks and pinch your barbs and you should be OK.
Naturally I'm kidding.

Put all the tackle in your checked luggage. Believe it or not, fishing hooks are on the banned list.

Ship them to yourself, I've had small personal items stolen from my checked baggage before. Your choice though, just don't bring them on board.

When the GF went to her parents, she carried on her pole, but her tackle box was in her checked luggage. No problems there.

RE:Fishing tackle-airplanes??
i know you already left and returned, but i have a short funny story about this. about 2006 i was on my way to seattle and to make things faster, i didn't check luggage. well, i was bringging some fishing gear back and just happened to have a couple halibut jigs in my backpack. these were BIG jig with BIG hooks, like 8-12 oz jigs. you should have seem the look on the security persons face!!priceless....believe it or not the guy was simpathetic to my story and let me CARRY THEM ON...(scary in retrospect) ...and just told me not to bring them on next time. of course i will never bring fishing tackle in my carry-on again...(then there is the time i brought my portable depthfinder on board, and let me just say they get pretty curious about electronics with little batteries and wires all over!!)
I have caught many fish in my life. The most exciting? The next one.....
