Salmon schedule?
Can anyone give me a general idea when to target Kings and Silvers in the salt from shore? This is for Salt, no river fishing. I will be fishing from shore from Area 9 (Whidbey Island west side) and probably from Everett/Edmonds, Golden Gardens, Seattle, West Seattle, that whole neck of the woods.
What I'm looking for specifically is about what one or two month range the fish can be caught, not where (but that could help too). Example: Catch Kings best between what months? Silvers between what months? I know I have to abide by reg dates too. I'm trying to plan camping trips and weekend getaways before campgrounds start filling up.
Newbie to salmon fishing, I can't seem to really find any specific info. I'm just planning on pretty much tossing spoons and that type of hardware.
Thanks a million,
Suzanne

RE:Salmon schedule?
If fishing from shore , your best bet is to target the migrating fish. For kings, Point No Point from the opener in july, through the closure in August. For Silvers, Bush Point or the Fort Casey shoreline in Sept-Oct. For resident silvers, you should get some info from Quadfather (WL member) or Wolverine ( WL member not the X-MEN) ,they fish from some of the shorelines from Edmonds to Seattle and have a wealth of information.
Another option is, when the seasons start, announce your desire to go fish, and see if a WL member has an open seat in his or her boat.

resident coho's can be caught year round. most prevalent down in south sound. Usually good fishing during the winter. I've been fishign down by Gig Harbor for SRC's and alot of people out there are catching rezzi coho's. They're small though...rezzi's don't usually get too big.
Kings, i'd say June-August
Coho's, anywhere between July to October with the meat of it in August

Suz. I sent you a PM. Also forgot to mention on Whidbey try the Fort Casey area, or Bush Point. You can Google Bush Point Steelhead, I know you said salmon, but there is a ton of info. to read, and they all swim the same.

The above info is spot on.
No kings for me, but I did well off of the Puget Sound beaches last year for Coho (and pinks of course). Think incoming/high tides, and buzzbombs..

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I'm a little confused. So you can catch resident coho year round? Are they legal to keep?ckim85 wrote:resident coho's can be caught year round. most prevalent down in south sound. Pm sent back Chris. I mainly fished Lagoon Pt. beach last year and killed the pinks, saw coho caught, but wasn't lucky enough myself. And they catch Kings From the beach there too. Few and far between, but they get them. Again not me though...yet :bball:The Quadfather wrote:Suz. I sent you a PM. Also forgot to mention on Whidbey try the Fort Casey area, or Bush Point. RE:Salmon schedule?
Yeah Point No Point you can fish from the beach. It's over in Hansville by Kingston.
RE:Salmon schedule?
depends on the time and the marine area but yeah you can keep them. check your regs for where you fish.hookorcrook wrote:I'm a little confused. So you can catch resident coho year round? resident coho are coho salmon that never leave the sound...hence "resident" coho. They are late released from the hatcheries so they stick around the Puget Sound or the Strait is about as far as they will go. You can typically find them in/near estruaries, often where you find SRC's. SRC's are protected in all salt water so make sure you know the difference between SRC's and rezzi coho's...get you a big ticket if you keep a SRC. Unbarb as well.
But they are not nearly as big as your typical coho salmon. Much smaller, often smaller than 12" but averaging anywhere from 14" to 20" or so.

Coho: Some small resi coho packs in the sound, but generally the push doesn't show till late August thru October.
Chums: Show up in mid Oct thru December.
Pinks: Odd years, but August/Sept for them
Kings: Resi blackmouth year around, but returning ocean fish show in June thru Sept.
Sockeye: Small populations returning headed for the locks.
Coho is about all you can target from the shore besides pinks but they won't show this year. Kings don't usually travel shallow enough to target from the shore...
For timing on the Coho, the last weekend in August thru mid October for them. Mid September thru Early october being tops....

Interesting Thread.
Except for the Humpys, I didn't know that people successfully fished for salmon from the beach?
(I need to put it on the bucket list...)
