Northwest Fishing Reports

While fishing for pinks is really really fun, and the silvers on the Skykomish are starting to show up, I can't help but get excited about fishing for big chinook on the coast. I've been stocking up on roe, and tuning my kwikfish. I'm already booking trips out there, and I'm letting you know about 'em because these fish are SO much fun. I'll be spending much of October out there, in the peak of the run. Coho are already filling up the Queets river, and angling pressure is the complete opposite of the Puget Sound pink areas.

Queets River: The Queets runs almost entirely through the Olympic National Park, which means that it is a true wilderness river. Since it is in the national park, a federal license is needed for guides to run it, something which a lot of guides don't get. That means fewer people, and more fish for you! Every year it gets a run of big kings and tons of silvers and it's so much fun!

I have dates available, but I'm already getting a lot of requests. I'd love to get you out in my drift boat, and I am setting aside a few days to do bank trips too, I know a lot of you prefer these trips.

He's a guide bro. He's gonna keep his spots to himself...and ya can't blame him.

Best bet sealegs is to look up the address for the hatchery and follow the river downstream and look for places to fish. That's how i've found where i like to fish there and other rivers i've never fished.

The best time is from now to the end of October. There aren't really any "secret" bank spots on the Humptulips, because there aren't many publicly accessible areas. The hatchery area has quite a few holes, both downstream and upstream of it, there is the "bar" I think they call it Reynvans or something, that area is good. Another boat launch downstream has a few decent areas, but for the most part the hatchery is it. It really is a drift boat river, most of the delicious water is behind private timber and gated access. Bank access is probably tougher on this one than many other rivers, and once you do hike into some of the areas, you won't have first water, because the boats will already be there, so heading to the hatchery is your best bet for fish on reliably.

That's the Queets, in the upper stretch between the campground and streator crossing. That's actually Mike in the picture, last season we drifted for big native steelhead.

What was that fish caught on in the 3rd pic?

That fish was caught on a bobber and eggs.

Why is there no snot left on the bait loop?

I dunno dude. It is what it is. It was a nice fish though, and there are more out there this year then that year. If you'd like to book a trip, give me a ring and we'll get you yours!

Do you run your clinic on the Queets or the Hump? I'm more excited about fishing the park this year, it's been a blast.

Kings coho and steelhead. Last year the steelhead fishing was pretty darn good, better than usual. The photo in my avatar is actually a steelhead from the Humptulips during steelhead season.
