I went to Yakama on Sat morn .Left my house at 5:00 am and had a nice drive going over.I got to Wapato around 8:00 am.I stopped by the Yaka Reservation stand looking for Huckleberries.WOW $$ 40.00 a gallon size bag.And that bag wasnt full at all.I thoght that was a bit steep but found out the Colvilles sell it for 65.00 a gallon.I bought one gallon and made 1 batch of jelly and a batch of jam.I had a lil bit left and made some more berry vinager.If you like Huckleberries now is the time.
You can pick them in the mountain areas but its alot of hiking and picking with the bears and other critters.Some hunter might see me and think I'm a bear with my summer tan and blow me away.No thanks I'll pay the 40 bucks.

I think you just gave me an idea on how to fund my mountain fishing trips!! Yes, now the time is ripe for picking, I saw some a couple weeks back, but they still had a couple weeks to go....

Just as good as that is Huckleberry Syrup for those pancakes.Or muffins and pastries.
Rolland if you go picking I'll be a customer of yours .Huckleberrys have a very nice aromatic flavor.The ones you saw ? Were they blue variety or red ones?

They were still green, but i've only seen purple......is that red or blue?..

I'm assuming red rac....but don't know for sure. you'll be the first i contact when my 3 gallon bucket is full...

i can never bring my self to buy those things my cousin leaves up in the woods and knows some spots to pick them usually i go upthere or up in the mountains by usk has alot too usually if 3 or 4 people pick for most of the day we usually get a five gallon bucket or 2 full, alot of work but it saves money plus you know there fresh and not out of someones freezer

I found that in my younger days that huckleberries are easy to find in areas that have been logged off in recent years. They like to grow in rotten logs and stumps. Last time I picked them was up at Crystal River Ranch on the way to Crystal Mtn Ski area along the White River past the town of Greenwater. Good luck in finding some. Take along some kids and make a day of it. You can turn into CRR and go straight up the logging road to a lake and fish there.... while the kids pick.... Have fun!
