night fishing at edmonds pier?

Post by aaronhume » Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:46 pm

Hi, I am new to both this forum and salt water fishing...

I am trying to figure out what works for catching salmon now down at the Edmonds pier... I have been using a chartreuse buzz bomb and have had no hits or anything during the day, and the other night I caught two baby salmon on it right after dusk, but I am also planning on catching some bait fish and run a sinker with that.

I do not have much gear for this yet, and have a small budget, but does anyone have recommendations or insight to night fishing here?

Thanks,
Aaron

Welcome,

Spinners, blue fox to be exact, for fishing off the pier day or night. Go pick up a couple diffrent color buzz bombs as well.

I heard today that two silvers were caught on the Edmonds pier. The first was around 8 a.m. and the second around 1 p.m. Weight of the fish varied based on the person or persons that told the story. Both fish were caught drifting herring on a bobber. Hence that would be my suggestion if you are going to try to catch salmon off the pier at night.

The season has really slowed down since the end of August. Groups of silvers have been spotted from time to time and regardless of what is offered the fish seems to be "shall we say" offended by the offering.

It has been eons since I've fished nights on the pier - my last real experience being around 1989 ish. Somebody at that time legitimately landed a nice sized coho on a white blue buzz bomb around 2 a.m. The fish had hit way out there as I recall so it would have been impossible for it the be one of those happy snaggers.

Last year there was a guy that fished late evening to early mornings drifting herring with no weight. He said he caught a few doing that.

Again fishing has really slowed down on the pier as of late. The coho may be around but aren't hitting too often so far. Bait seems be scarce over the last feew weeks. The best recomendation I have is taking time and if you are going to use jigs like buzzbombs to have at least a few glow in dark versions.

If you are able to make river trips! they have been catching HO's at C-Q and the rivers are somewhat high and muddyish but other then that there all runnin about 5-10 pounds at the most right now! Best ber for river fishing is:
Snohomish- if you got a boat run toward S.R. 522 an troll orange to red wiggle warts down stream
Skykomish- starting to heat up
Wallace- starting to heat up
Green/duwamish- has slowed since the netting has begun
Nisqually- I dont want to even go there. LAMFO- due to the combat fishing and snaggers there!
Stillagumish- (main river) heard its good!
for river gear wise i say use a variety of these: Bluefox, Artic fox- #2-4 wiggle warts, a variety of color and sizes of corky and yarn, jig, float eggs, plunking, eggs, float eggs/ shrimp... katmasters 1/4 oz. in variety of colors.

It also depends on weather also! There has been also Certain river parking spots that has been broken into! so be C-A-R-E-F-U-L and dont store anything valuable in your car! keep them at home or take them with u to the fishing hole!

Gonefishing - I was at the pier when that guy landed his second silver it was probably close to 8 pounds and yes it was drifting cut herring. also, do you know of glow in the dark paint I could get for the buzz bombs? I have like 4 different ones now and can't really keep buying more right now due to no job heh...

Fishingboy - unfortunately I do not have access to a boat, but do you have any recommendations for where to park by some of those rivers and hike it? I am thinking snohomish and skykomish are easiest for me to get to.

my dad just gave me some of his old king fishing gear including a bunch of Mepps and a few cut plug herring, however everything has trebble hooks so I have to deal with that... and all the hooks are very large, I think 4/0 and 5/0 or so.

a gentleman down at the pier made/gave me a setup for drifting cut herring and he was a real nice guy and showed me a bunch of pointers and it sounds like you want to do the drifting from the north side of the pier because the fish will come down the beach area and then right out by the pier, and I saw 3 different little schools of silvers doing just that, and they went right under the pier. he also said typically a good time to drift is when the tide is running out, for a specific current pattern I guess.

anyway thanks for all the ideas and suggestions!

To answer the question on the glow in the dark paint. I'd maybe go up to Ted's Sport Center in north Lynnwood. As I recall they had or have glow in the dark paint for jigs. I may have said in another thread that Ted's gets me in trouble because I always end up buying more than I intend to get so my trips by the store while they are open is few and far between. I might go by them this afternoon and see if they still have glow in the dark paint for jigs and jig heads... just leaving the credit card far out of reach.

I'd still be floating herring at night because the schools of Coho have so few and far in between this season, mainly because I'm no longer 18 or 19 and think I can toss jigs all night without it wearing out my arm. However, watching herring drift is like watching paint dry... in the words of "Nick" it's boooooring.

I think I know who you were talking too as I spoke with one person who said "this is an odd time for me because I usually don't drift for coho on the incoming tide but rather the out going." But he is right, normally the fish will swim along the breakwater wall and around the corner from the ferry dock side. The schools have been few and far inbetween and for me they have been heading north rather than west to south like usual.

"Bobber and hearing"- that's pretty cool. I saw some guy's fishing off the jetty at Westport or Ocean Shores (can't remember which) with bobbers and hearing. 4" to 5" bobbers. Always wanted to try it.

try goin to a gen x clothing store (or something similiar), they usually have glow in the dark finger nail polish. i usually keep some pink finger nail polish on me when the pinks are running out at dash pt to touch up my lures. it works pretty good an might be easier for you to get.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

To answer the question yes they did have some glow Jig head/Jig paint in yellow, white, and green. It's available in a 1oz bottle for about $4.39 (as I recall) and a different brand was 2 oz for $6.79. I don't know how many jigs you can paint with a 1oz bottle and I wasn't going to bother Mike Chamberlain over it when he was trying to sell somebody a fishing pole.

They also had a glow in the dark buzz bomb for around the price of the 1oz. paint bottle.... brush not included.
