Granted I'm the newbie, but on Youtube I saw an excellent clip on modifying your Salmon spoons, with a split ring and swivel to cut down on them being able to leverage the hook loose by rolling.

Clip the welded ring, on the spoon, ( I was doing King fishers and Coho killers)
Add a #4 split ring (I used #3 its what I had on hand)
Add a Swivel to the slit ring, I used #5 G. Pucci Roller swivels, (smaller)
and then a 1/0 or 2/0 open Eye hook , (I used 2/0 9510 Mustads)
Pinch your eye, Pinch your barb, I have found that a lg vise grips work extremely well for this.

Then holding the hook spin lure like a propeller, makes sure the swivel is working well.

There you have a lure that can not be leveraged out, and is only slightly longer then stock.

9 spoons and 16 Coho Killers done last night, I have the stabbed fingers to prove it.

I found that the older VMC hooks could be reused, Eye opened and repinched. The newer Dark Sickle hooks will snap and likely stab deep into your hand or fingers, if you try and open the eye up, GEE ask me how I know that... I kept them for re ties, they are a type of brittle zinc I think.

We use coyote spoon, that have the welded split ring. I see no need to switch all of them over due to lost fish. Hook to land ratio is actually pretty good compared to most situations.
