Favorite handgun caliber and why.

Post by tommytitan08 » Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:50 pm

What is your favorite handgun caliber and why for concealed carry or carrying out in the field:rendeer: :salut: ? I recently acquired a 10mm glock and was wondering what other people on this site think. Thanks in advance.

I prefer a 45. I carry the Para Ordnance C7LDA Stainless off duty. I also like 40 cal and have a Glock 23 which I carry sometimes. I like 45 and 40 for their stopping power.

I prefer a 357 mag for probably obvious reasons. One is it will penetrate the block of an engine through the front end.Or you can wing a shoulder and find the shell in his rump. All around its a stopper.9mm and 10mm will hit and travel right out a body.My 2nd choice is the 45. I have a Colt Contender 45 cal.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I'm with Dave...I personally prefer .40 and .45 cal as well because...
-They both have a proven track record for their effectivness
-Target re-acquisition is quick and easily maintained during high cycle rates
-Great for extended skills / profeciency training because of low fatigue rate
- Wide range of (firearm) manufactures to fit my requirements
- Very common calibers, easy to find at all different price ranges anywhere in the world
Hope you enjoy your gun Tommy! :cheese:

There are a couple reasons i got the 10mm. 1 because of price i got it for. 2 because i'm an outdoorsman so if i ever need to stop charging big game i've got the gun to do it but with autoloader capacity and ease of finding accessories. I agree w racfish it appears as though we got it covered.

It all depends on what the gun is going to be used for. For my home defense night stand gun its a 9 mm Springfield XDm with both light and laser, and hollow point rounds so the rounds stay in the perp and not punch through and do collateral damage. For casual carry its either an Ed Brown or a Kimber 45, again with HP rounds. For dress-up pocket carry its a Kahr 9 mm, again with HP bullets. For a field work backup revolver its a S&W 460 loaded with a heavy lead rounds that hopefully will break plenty of bones on its way through the moose or bear thats trying to get up close and personal with me.
Personally I like 9's for soft targets, 45's for just because, 454 & 460 because of their stopping power. I've had 10's and liked them. Hated every snappy 40 that I've ever tried. Had 357's & 44 mags but don't like shooting them in light weight frames. I personally feel that people get far too hung up on on the caliber and not the makeup of the round that it shoots. Choosing the right round loading is of most importance.

Holy smokes Wolverine, a 454 or 460 for a backup! What the heck are you packing as your long shooter?

9MM.

Price and availability of ammunition.
Capacity.
Ballistics with modern hollow points are on par with the bigger calibers to stop 2-legged critters.

Followed by the .45

Dont care for the .40 or .357. Too snappy for my liking.

I'll stick with my 8 3/8 ported barrel 44mag, yeah its a big gun but it has very little kick so I can be back on target much faster. Loaded with some 300 grain rounds and I'll feel nice and safe no matter what or who comes out of the bush.

I would have to say the 10mm but only if it's a glock. Glock is the only 10mm that has the recoil and balance of the weapon right for the 10mm. Now what 10mm did you buy the 20, 20C or 29?
