Smallest fish ever caught on rod and reel...

Post by Rollin with Rolland » Sun May 11, 2008 11:38 am

Alright, this HAS to be a WA state record!!

Image

i caught this "fish" Sat. on a jig while lingcod fishing (ok, i know that's salt but whose keeping track). That is a picture of it on my knee, about the length of a penny, or 1". i say it's a halibut fry, sweet, my first halibut! Unless you can prove me wrong...:-"

Yeah, it's easy catching those "BIG ONES" everyone is after, but the true fisherman (like myself) can even catch the small ones. Can anyone go any smaller than this???
I have caught many fish in my life. The most exciting? The next one.....

WOW! That is tiny. What is that? It looks like a jelly fish or a fish in the early stages of developement. Either that fish was in the wrong place at the wrong time or he wanted to hitch a ride on your jig. I don't know that that can be beat. Nice catch Rollin with Rolland.

hate to burst your bubble, but that's not a halibut fry. Halibut start off looking like normal fish
This is a quote from wikipedia

"When the Halibut is born the eyes are on both sides of its head so it has to swim like a salmon. After about 6 months one eye will migrate to the other side of its head, making it look more like the flounder. This happens at the same time that the stationary eyed side begins to develop a blackish-grey pigment while the other side remains white. This disguises a halibut from above (blending with the ocean floor) and from below (blending into the light from the sky)."

From your picture, it looks like a mature flatfish, but all flat fish (flounders, halis) don't start out that way...

ok sam k, way to get technical on me. there goes my first halibut.:elephant:

it actually did have eyes on both sides, it's just hard to tell from the photo because it is totally transparent. you can just make out two eyes a backbone, and a tail fin. just wanted to show off my "SMALL ONE"...

Nice job RwR! :jocolor: It definately could be a halibut fry. It also could be a flounder/sole/sand-ab fry as well. Either way, that is freakin cool. I've never had anything like that happen to me while jigging for lingcods. How is ling fishing progressing up in the Juans?! Nice catch and sweet little fish...KTK

Then maybe it was a small halibut. Baby hali's start off looking like normal fish, then start to morph into the body we normally associate with Halibut

hahaha! That is exactly what I was thinking. Really though that is a crazy catch. How did you reel it in without breaking the fish?

well im pretty sure it's not smaller, but I have some competition. In fact I use this pic as my avatar. I caught this little bugger in England. We would usually spend time catching bait fish using maggots. then use the bait fish to catch pike. Well this one river we were on had an abundance of these annoying little suckers that would hit your maggot before any real fish stood a chance.
As you can see the maggot is bigger than his head....(the little retard!!) ](*,)

I've caught Stickle-back on rod and reel before. They are small. Most everyone has some sort of micro-organisms on their line after a dip in the water.Just to be technical.:-)
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

:-"
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker
