Slough Salmon

Post by mallard83 » Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:21 pm

I just thought I would post this for those of you that fish for Kings in lake Sammamish. I was riding my bike up the Sammamish slough trail this afternoon and I noticed something large jump in the water and at first I didn't think anything of it until I noticed shadows in the water about 50 yards upriver from where I saw the fish roll. I decided to investigate and walked to the rivers edge where I saw no less then 50 or so Chinook. The average size of this school appeared to be about 15 lbs a piece. I did see a few fish that deffinatly hit the 30 lb mark. It really disgusted me seeing these fish stopped behind a seemingly solid wall of weeds. I just hope the improvements that are being made to the slough will help the salmon and the now mabey even the non-existent steelhead runs. I will not disclose the area of slough that I saw these fish because I don't want the possibility of poachers reading this. :-$

mallad: I've been hearing that guys are posted up RIGHT at the mouth of the Issaquah Creek and have been fishing, (most likely flossing/snagging) for these kings right there. Read your regs people. 100 yards away from teh mouth of the creek.

It's tough to see how unrespectful people are, and the negative impacts it has on our fisheries...

Yeah, that is why I would not disclose the exact spot I saw the salmon. It is because of a few foolish/idiotic people that our opportunities at fishing are declining rapidly. I remember when the Sammamish Slough had a really good run of Steelhead. Not that long ago, but it is gone now.

I'd probably be correct to guess that a lot more of those Lake Sammamish cutt's back then made the trip out to the sound and back every year, with many now being residents of just Sammamish and not migrating out and in of the lake to spawn in the stream...???

Cool! Maybe these monsters will eat some of those stinky pikeminnows that infest that river! Or at least tear them apart.

EDIT: BTW, that river is a great place to go and see the fish up close. I remember last year watching the river and seeing all of the salmon going up the river. It was pretty cool.

Unfortunately it's the pikeminnows that eat the salmon. The small fry. They do a toll on the salmon when they head out to the salt. You can actually collect bounties for catching them in certain areas and return the fish for money, all done by the WDFW I believe....

Yeah, but unfortunately not the slough. There's nothing but pikeminnow in that river (well, except the ocasional smallie, perch, and larger trout). But out of 50 or so fish I got out of the slough ony 3 of them were something other than pikeminnow.

Mikey,
Kill them. They gouge up on the salmon fry when they head out to Lake WA and then eventually out to the sound.

From the [url=http://www.pikeminnow.org/]
The 2007 Sport reward payment schedule is as follows:

0-100 fish: $4 per fish
101-400 fish: $5 per fish
401 and above: $8 per fish
Minimum Size is 9 inches.

TAGGED FISH rewards are $500 per tagged fish.
It is the Bonneville Power Administration that hands out the money. One has to fish in certain areas and register before fishing. It is only in the Columbia and Snake river areas (rats) from all that I found out.
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Yes that is the bounty sheet I believe. Still, the pikeminnow eat the salmon. I'd get rid of them whether I get money or not. I'd rather have salmon still active and spawning in 20 years.

Hm, me thinks there might be a good little competition for us to have next year. How many Pikeminnow can one pull from the Slough in a 6 hour period.

Pikeminnows can be so thick in places its gross. I've dropped worms down to the bottom to catch whatever at Priest Lake on a hot afternoon and once you get into some PIkeminnows you can get one of those things in a matter of 5 seconds...It's terrible how thick they are over there...
