Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
I don't use my outboard much, but when I do....I prefer Dos Equis.
Ok, seriously, I actually don't use it much....when I use it on the Sound I'll run it in a bucket of fresh water for 5-10 minutes to try to flush out the salt. Don't feel the need to run it in the tank at home when I use it in fresh water unless I want to run the fuel out.
Now, I used it on the lower Duwamish yesterday and took out at 1st ave. Any thoughts on whether it should be flushed after use this low in the system where the river is affected by the tides? Common sense tells me to go ahead and flush it.

Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
personally i haven't flushed mine ever after running in the Duwi.. i don't think its needed but i don't think its a bad idea either.. i just never have time after..
Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
I never thought it being salt water, but the other week were casting Dick Nites and caught flounder between the power lines and Boeing Bridge. Flounder can survive in brackish water.
Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
Saw a small flounder pulled at 112th last month. Since I routinely see seaweed in the water I thought there might be some heavy mixing going on.
Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
I caught a flounder pulling plugs this past Saturday morning just before 1st light. right at the power lines, my plug was skipping bottom and uhhh, well u know the rest.. got myself a bullhead on a DN a little while later.. legit.. I wasn't skunked at least!
salt or not the Duwi is not the cleanest river.. flushing is not a bad idea..

Where else can you have this much fun in a Superfund site!
Never crossed my mind, but yeah, probably a good idea..

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I hear the flounder fry up real good. Catch some more and let us know if you grow any extra limbs.oneshot wrote:I caught a flounder pulling plugs this past Saturday morning just before 1st light. right at the power lines, my plug was skipping bottom and uhhh, well u know the rest.. got myself a bullhead on a DN a little while later.. legit.. I would not consider running my in the Duwwi motor and NOT flushing it thoroughly. Your running in salt water period.

Then you put the contaniments in another river to spoil IT.oneshot wrote:come to think, last couple times in the Duwi, I have gone to the snoho the next day or 2 later.. flush happens then..

Duwi to the lower Snoho..... Kind of a toss up but lets stop and really think about it, ruin it, don't think so. How much water is left in a 20hp outboard, a couple teaspoons at best. So we put a couple nasty teaspoons in the lower Snoho with the thousands of gallons of cow sewage dumped in at the Phil on a regular basis, do ya really think anyone would notice or that couple teaspoons is going to make a difference? I'm also pretty sure no one hangs it over the side when they gotta go.....Amx wrote:Then you put the contaniments in another river to spoil IT.oneshot wrote:come to think, last couple times in the Duwi, I have gone to the snoho the next day or 2 later.. flush happens then..
Besides the polution in the Duwi is not the water. Sure its slow moving frog water but the nasty stuff is in the soil from many, many years ago, that's what makes it a "Super Fund Site".

Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
I ruined ther snoho... feeling pretty bad right now..
Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
Ok, if I hadn't convinced myself already, then I certainly am now. Next question, where can I take my boat to get it decontaminated?

I know nothing about either river, except that the Duwi is polluted.Bodofish wrote:Duwi to the lower Snoho..... Kind of a toss up but lets stop and really think about it, ruin it, don't think so. Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
how are you coming to this conclusion AMX? not that i don't agree.. i just want to know how you are coming up with this knowledge..
my sister-inlaw works for the EPA and takes water and soil samples all over Washington she has given some insider info this way.. what bodofish said about the soil is dead on! not the water as much as it is the soil.. the water is ever flowing into the ocean from snow melt..
probably shouldn't boat in elliot bay or any of puget sound for that matter either if you;re afraid to boat in the Duwi..

Re: Flush outboard after running on lower Duwamish?
Last time I looked at the Duwi it was dirty, good enough for me. The plant I worked at was on the shore. Altho this was back in about '75. Haven't heard much good about it since.
