bobber stops
can anyone recommend a material i can use to make bobber stops? i wanted to use dacron but sportco only had 100lb dacron available, a little bit big for my purposes, i need approx the same size material as the beau mac bobber stops? i figured i could save alot of money in the long haul since the little buggers go faster than you think lol
Re: bobber stops

Re: bobber stops
I've been using silk thread. Seems to work pretty well. You might try a sewing supply store as I think you can buy Dacron thread on the spool....Not sure how big of diameter you can get there though.
From doing a Google search, sounds like cotton would work too.
Additionally, I've read about using rubber bands. Tried it once, but think I was using too heavy of a rubber band as it didn't work for me. Here is the link to the suggestion.

Re: bobber stops
20# fly line backing. Works good for a lot of stuff, nice bright color too.

Re: bobber stops
Most of the fly backing is waxed and holds real well. I keep a spool in my pack, it's handy stuff for many things.goonatic wrote:oh yeah, fly backing, another thread ill pick up, i guess ill try all of them and see which ones slip the least ammount, because leftover 50lb braid isnt doing too well lol

Re: bobber stops
I started tying my own last year. I stop at the Fly shop down the street, they sell dacron by the yard so I just buy a yard at time. I will have to try the fly backing and see the difference.

Re: bobber stops
When you buy fly lines online half the shops will toss in a roll of backing. It goes through the eyes better too. If you have a "fasttie" no need to muck around with the straws and crap, just put a little stand alone nail knot on the line, works better than any pre-tied stuff.Gringo Pescador wrote:I started tying my own last year. Re: bobber stops
Braid is too slippery, that's why you have to use special knots to even tie it to any other line.goonatic wrote:oh yeah, fly backing, another thread ill pick up, i guess ill try all of them and see which ones slip the least amount, because leftover 50lb braid isnt doing too well lol

Re: bobber stops
I know there is some glory in making things yourself.. i hate tying special knots! i'm just getting more into bobber and egg/jig fishing myself. i bought a bag of bobber stops for i think it was like $1.29 for what looks to be a bunch! they were cheap!
again i understand personal satisfaction and being self sufficient but dang, the time and energy not wasted searching for the right product and making them is a nice satisfying thing too

Re: bobber stops
I use them too but I've found the ones you tie yourself are much tighter and go through the eyes better.

Re: bobber stops
As for store-bought, I've only used the ones that come with the floats and have found they tend to get hung up in the eye's of my baitcasting rod on every cast. I too think that my home tied silk ones pass through the eyes better partly due to the smaller diameter thread over the ones that came with my floats. Haven't tried making my own with Dacron yet, but will have to make the switch sometime as my silk thread supply is running low.Bodofish wrote:I use them too but I've found the ones you tie yourself are much tighter and go through the eyes better.
FWIW.

Re: bobber stops
If you just tie them straight to the main line you don't need to worry about putting them on first, they can go on anytime. And if you use the smaller line you don't have to take them off if you switch to a different lure for a bit.

Re: bobber stops
My initial goal was a smaller knot. I will have to try the nail knot, that would eliminate the issue I always have of rigging everything up AND THEN realizing I forgot the bobber stop

Re: bobber stops
ahh baitcasters, too many times ive gotten horrid backlashes because the knot got stuck on one of the guides or the line guide on the reel itself lol, even with spinning reels, sometimes on the cast the line catches on the "hump" from the bobber stop if its a bit big
Re: bobber stops
well its settled, bought 180 cocktail straws for a buck, a hundred small beads for a buck, and 50yds of micron fly backing for 4 bucks, im set!
