RE:what kind of reel
I use both but mainly baitcasters. I have several different baitcasters and they all work well. Keep em lubed up and clean and theyll cast a mile and a half for ya. I use to have to cast with my right and then swap the rod to the left to retrieve. Im over that one. I learned to cast it with my left hand so no swap to do. I have caught many fish with a baitcaster and a spinning rod. The only reason I use my spinning rod drift fishing is to toss small amounts of weight 1/4 oz or less alot easier then tossing out 1/4 oz or less with my baitcaster. I can do it but just cant get it to where I want to. My 9ft loomis with the abu 104 spin reel casts it out effortlessly. I also use the spin rod for bobber and jig, Im still gettin the hang of that. If you do go to a baitcaster learn to use the brake setup. Adjust it every time you switch your setup or need to retie your set up. The weight changes so your brakes will need to be adjusted also. It will help out with back lashes.
More fish please!
RE:what kind of reel
I never understood the whole concept of "right handed and left handed" bait casters. I'm right handed, I prefer casting with my right hand, holding the rod with my right, setting the hook with my right hand and fighting the fish with my right hand, but i have to buy a left handed bait caster. It's not a big deal anymore, for a while there were limited kinds of left handed bait casters, now every brand/model has one.flinginpooh wrote:I use to have to cast with my right and then swap the rod to the left to retrieve. RE:what kind of reel
I found this great article on backlashes with baitcasters . . .

Here is also a video on a neat little trick on getting rid of a backlash (also included in the article).

RE:what kind of reel
Just when I thought I figured out my baitcaster, I lose 3 spoons trying to cast across the river. I messed with the brakes or whatever and each time I casted, the reel would freeze up and bye bye spoon. HELP!!! :bom: :bom: :bom: :bom: :bom:curado wrote:Before u sell it fish with me i can get u up and running.

RE:what kind of reel
EXACTLY! I just don't have time to mess with all that especially when most of my trips consist of waking up at 1am to leave at 2am to be on the river by 4am. Spending 30-40 bucks on gas and food just so i can catch a fish, only to be thwarted by some crazy backlash or break problem while fishing. mmm mmmjens wrote: Just when I thought I figured out my baitcaster, I lose 3 spoons trying to cast across the river.
