Musky flyfishing info & site for flyfishing

I happened upon this flyfishing website. Pretty interesting. The article is from a gent fishing in the midwest for true muskies. Though I do find the info relevent here too. Muskyhunter did I miss an email from you? Sorry, try again. I'm looking forward to another season of teasing those Tigers with a fly. I found the Pike and LMB absolutly love the fly, but those Muskies are like going for native Steelhead. This year it will be a faster lighter rod and bigger flies. I would like to set down sometime and talk fish'n.

Now I just have to learn how to cast with fly gear. One things that confuses me is... My idea of fly fishing uses very light lures. What lures would one use to fly fish Musky? Can I just grab what already have in my tackle box or do I need some new gear?

Rich, you can learn how to choose a fly in an afternoon. You can learn to how read the water in a year or so. But truly learning how to cast with fly gear is a life long process. >:"":>

I've been telling myself "One of these days" I've dabbled with the fly rod for trout and panfish,key word (dabbled)
I'm so far in debt with traditional gear that I havn't looked to much into tigers or northerns on the fly but will
say again....One of these days.

I'm with you, Kevin....... my day also WILL come.

Mike Grahm and I have pursued the Tigers for two years now out at Silver Lake. Although we have not hooked up yet, we have spotted several cruising the shoreline. One day Mike spotted one that was easily in the 40"+ range. He got so excited in seeing it, he was jumping around in the back of the 14' aluminum boat shouting "Marc! There's one, he's &%*# huge!!!! What Mike didn't realize is that I was on the bow and he was rocking the boat so much I almost went a$$ over tea kettle into the lake!!!!

The link to the video is great. I had to chuckle because those guys were complete novices when it came to fly casting for the Tigers. I laughed when he attempted to remove the hook with hemostats. Ah, guys, you're not dealing with a cutthroat trout here. I'm not knocking their video, just thought it was cute as to how they were learning as they go. Their intentions were good and they were successful, however I think they should have researched the handling of the fish a bit more before they caught one.

Mike and I are still determined to reach success in casting for Pike and Muskies. From all the articles and videos we have researched, I'm sure that we will hook into them someday soon. We have the right flies, rods, reels, line and leaders and we are hunting in the right spots. I think it is just a matter of being at the right place and time. Below is a fly I tied up for Muskies.

I've always believed, "After all, it is really up to the fish".

Marc, the fly looks great. Colors are right, length is good and weighted head for that jigging effect. I tie one very simular. My experience tells me to add a trailer hook. That fly will catch Pike for sure. Musky, well I'm still to figure that one out myself. I've not gotten past the follows stage yet.

Not sure if you all watch it but my friend Pete will be trying his luck for pike on the fly on the newest episode of The Next Bite,it will be airing on Versus this upcoming Tuesday at 10AM. Its from Phelps Lake Saskatchewan.
It should be rather entertaining and useful,Pete is rather new to a fly rod.

I'll have to record that, it should be well worth watching. I've done some more research on the Musky on the fly and found some additional challanges to catch and release. The hooks used on the Musky flies need to be configured and type that can not easily be swallowed. Musky and Pike inhale the fly as they would any bait fish. Sadly there is a 1 in 4 chance of it getting so far down that it's difficult to retrieve the fly without injuring the fish. The bigger the fish the more likely it is to happen. I have experienced this with Pike but being generally smaller long pliers and barbless hooks does the trick. There are special hooks that further reduce the chance of injury. However, being very concerned about injuring one of our Tigers I'm going to discontinue using the fly for Musky. Once I find the correct hooks or change in fly design I'll reconsider. Until then its on for the Pike on the fly, but bucktail spinners, swimbaits and spinnerbaits for the Tigers.

Maybe someone can chime in with suggestions for hooks?
