Suzuki 6hp 4 stroke stalls when you give it gas.

Post by Matt » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:19 pm

I am having trouble with one of our work motors and trying to figure it out. It starts up quickly on the first or second pull and will idle forever but once you try and give it ANY gas it bogs way down and sometimes will completely die. Other times it will bog down for a while then clear out and go to higher RPM. It is pumping water, the carbs are clean, the fuel filter (little inline one) appears to be clear, and it is getting good spark. The fuel is supplied from an interior tank.

Any advice?

I bet they can, I bet they can take a week to get me the motor back too. I don't have a week, we got work tomorrow.

Check the fuel filter and the pumper carb. running out of gas..... Easy squeezy.

The fuel filter appears free of obstruction and I checked the diaphragm on the fuel pump and it looked fine as well. Pulled the carb and checked the jets, they were all clear/clean, the interior of the carb was very clean, no varnish. It is an internal fuel tank so I know it is not an issue with the pump ball on the fuel line, although I am suspect of the line running from the interior tank.....

I bet the fuel line is bad, probably from 10% crap gas we get now. Killing fuel lines everywhere.

It sounds like a classic fuel line/filter issue, but if you have ruled those out... My next question would be, "are the mechanics to advance the timing working OK?" Lastly, how is it when the engine is cold? Can you run at high RPM's before it has really warmed up? If so, a long shot may be the cooling system. My kicker never liked running at more than trolling speed, at least once it had warmed up a bit, it would cough a few times sputter and die. Pea stream looked really strong, even at low RPMs which should have been my first clue. A little while back, the pea stream stopped, the motor overheated and shut itself down. I went all through the cooling system and found a really clogged plastic filter in with my thermostat. Cleaned out the filter and thermostat, put it all back together and the motor is now very happy to run all day at any RPM. Pea stream is now a nice normal trickle at trolling speeds. My thermostat was easy to get to, not sure about your zuki.

The pee stream was not working at first so I jammed a pipe cleaner up the hole and cleared out some debris, now it pumps water fine, its a slow steady trickle. The water coming out seemed to get really hot which worried me pretty thoroughly though. It sounds like I am just going to be taking it to the shop and using the backup (crappy) motor with no throttle cable, lol.

With all the casio money I'd think they would be buying you a new Yami every year...... Now don't even think about using yours, gotta have strick separation between work and play.... :)

I'm guessing that Suzi is a Tahatsu in disguise...... have you tried to squeezing the bulb while giving it the throttle??

Yah the tribe has lots of money, but it is allocated to a lot of departments. Our project gets very limited funding, unfortunately. There is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever take my T8 to work LOL, although I regret selling my 15 hp evinrude, that would have made and excellent work motor! Dang.....

There is no bulb to squeeze as it is running off the internal tank. I am wondering if the switch to switch from external to internal tanks may have be faulty.....

No bulb???? How do you get enough fuel up to? My kicker runs off the main and I have to use a bulb to get the fuel started. It has to have no air at all or the little pump can't pull it. In fact I can't think of a setup that doesn't have a prime bulb in the hose. Now if a guy had an electric for positive pressure there would be no need. Pump It Up, get all the air out of the line, I'll bet it goes.

Yeah toys don't go to work except for show and tell......

No what I mean by internal tank is it is actually a .3 gallon tank housed under the engine cowling. There is no fuel tank, hense no bulb.

Ah gottcha....... Been a while since I've played with anything that small.... Can ya clean the tank out? Is the pickup free? The old addage "It only takes air, gas and a spark." is never truer than with a little OB. Since it's a 4 stroke there is probably no mechanical advance. So get all three and it should run.
