Chasing Kokes Tomorrow

Post by Lotech Joe » Thu Jun 23, 2011 1:10 am

I'm going after kokanee in a lake that I haven't fished for over 35 years. Loon Lake in Stevens County. I'll be trolling red mono with a weight ahead of a 0/0 brass and chrome dodger. Then a red snubber with 2-3 feet of 4# test leader attached to a red wedding ring with a treble hook tipped with white shoepeg corn. That worked 35-40 years ago. We'll see if it still works tomorrow. Wish me luck.
WE'LL SEE.

Sounds like it should work fine. There were tons of reports coming out of Loon Lake last year for kokanee, but I haven't been seeing them this year... hmmm..

It has a great population of smallish medium kokes.

Goin' "Old School" this time. May have some fly fishin' gear for sale afterward. Depends on lots of things. No shame involved, but I understand.

I know. No worries. With the massive low pressure that just went through, and predicted high winds, I may not go after all. We'll have to see what sun-up brings.

You might try putting the snubber in front of the dodger if you aren't getting much fish action. With the snubber on the back end, the motion of the dodger is inhibited a bit. Good luck if you go, a front has moved into the Puget Sound area, feels like we will be seeing rain in the near future.

Got skunked. It was hard finding a place on the lake without whitecaps and big waves. After 2 hours I got tired of fighting the wind. It's OK though, at least I was on the water.

I thought about posting a report but there's nothing to report but high winds.

I am back in town visiting for a week. My buddy and I have been night fishing for Loon's kokes and have done real well! We head to his secret spot well away from the night crowds (well kinda secret.....more and more boats have been joining us there as of late!). The lake gets real calm after the pleasure boaters leave. It's all in the timing of the bite. If we are lucky they will start at 10:00 or 10:30 PM and we can get a mess and head on home. If we are unlucky they don't start in earnest until after midnight. Just a couple days ago they went on a "suicide bite" at 2:00 AM and we walloped em, getting more fish in 1 hour than in the previous 4 hours! There are definitely a lot of kokes in this lake, allowing us to be selective. Our keepers are in the 12-15" range, all others are returned to fight another day. His smoker has been busy as of late!

Glow jigs and shoepeg corn at night, fished with a slow jigging motion in the bottom 24" of water. Sometimes they seem to prefer pink maggots along with the corn. Think small for starters. However, when the bite is really ripping, they will readily take large jigs, ie size 6 hooks! Either way, they had better glow.

Years ago, I used to get into them like that trolling during the daylight. With split days off and chores at home, I just don't have time for night fishing. Besides, I'm not geared for night fishing. Sure do miss fried kokanee and hash browns.
