Re: Ive started making lures
Im hoping to generate enough money to make products to sell at a vending booth at Downriver Days up in Ione in July.
Re: Ive started making lures
I wish you the best of luck!
I tried making a business out of one of my other hobbies (radio control planes) several years ago. It sucked all the life and fun time out of my favorite past time! Plus I figured out I was only making about $.07/hour - gross!
Seriously, I hope it goes well for you.

You should share some stories about your Grandpa. He did a lot to improve the fisheries in and around the Colville Area. Some of the places he packed fish into in an old Milk Can. ![ThumbsUp [thumbsup]](./images/smilies/msp_thumbsup.gif)

Ive been trying to get a hold of his slides so they can be digitized but for some reason my grandma is reluctant to hand them over. She is worried they will get damaged or something.ridgeratt wrote:You should share some stories about your Grandpa. He did a lot to improve the fisheries in and around the Colville Area. He used to also pack fish in by mule too.
He came to my high school biology class to give a presentation of fish development. Brought his slides. It was really cool. After the presentation my high school biology teacher asked him what type of schooling he went to for his job. He grandpa laughed and said, "you dont wanna know", but the teacher persisted and said he learned everything on the job after he had served in the air force. He started out at the hatchery in Ford, WA and worked his way up.
One of my favorite stories was that a buddy of his had come up to the area to go camping for a few days and asked him where a good spot to go fishing would be. So my Grandpa proceeds to steer him to Little Twin lakes and told him even what type of fly to use. The guy gets back after camping there a couple days and tells him how horrible the fishing was, but he caught one really big one and described how he caught it and such. My grandpa replies, "the hell you did, we killed off that lake two weeks ago."
In spite of having cut off his right index finger as a kid with a hatchet, and then his right middle and ring finger in half with a table saw in his golden years, he could still outcast me with a fly rod. His loops where perfect and a thing of beauty. He added padding to the handle so he could grip it better.
I remember him taking me with him on a trip to Kings Lake and watched him take fish out of the fish trap and stripped the milk & eggs, sending the fish sliding back to the lake via a chute, then swirling the eggs in a 5 gallon bucket. A trick he had was he would bounce the eggs off the inside off the bucket (by pouring them into a funnel with a tube out the bottom). the stronger more viable eggs would survive but the weak eggs would die.
I'll have to put those in my blog on my website, gonna have to get with my dad to get some other stories too.

BTW had to change from Ting's Tackle to Bakercraft Lures cause there was already a Ting's Fishing Tackle out there in the world and just didnt want to risk trademark infringement. For those who dont know Ting was my Grandpa's nickname.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

yeah, I know unless I get higher production in order to land a distributor, I wont be making much, and even then, no guaranteesToni wrote:Good luck, I have yet to break even.ruthven78 wrote:if I can make enough to just help pay for the gas to go fishing I'll be happy lol

You may need to get barcodes and they aren't cheap.ruthven78 wrote:yeah, I know unless I get higher production in order to land a distributor, I wont be making much, and even then, no guaranteesToni wrote:Good luck, I have yet to break even.ruthven78 wrote:if I can make enough to just help pay for the gas to go fishing I'll be happy lol

Re: Ive started making lures
yeah will have to bite that bullet if I want to sell in other stores... "membership rates starting at $250" for UPC codes.....ouch!
Currently Im trying to wrap my head around sales tax....think I will just not charge sales tax and then figure out how much to withhold after the sale. I use GoDaddy's online store product and there is no way to adjust the sales tax rate, you can only charge by state. If I was able to add by zip code I could at least add the tax zones individually as I dont think there are any cases of there being more than one zone per zip code.

Maybe in your area there is only one sales tax per zip. Not where I live. In 5 miles from my house (zip) there are 3 or 4 different rates.
I use the store on my website template but it uses Paypal for shopping cart. There I set it at 9.3%. If it is more than 9.3% I bite it. If it is less than that amount I put the difference in the mail with the items.
Then you have to keep track of all those different areas you mailed to (location code) and report it to the WA Dept. Of Revenue by Jan.31.
So much fun...also work that no one but you sees the results of.
