water inlet tube
how tight should the water inlet tube be connected to the water pump and water tube?
mines can spin in the pump and around the water tube?

Re: water inlet tube
Does it leak? Some fittings are made to spin much like the end of a garden hose brass fitting. It is going to depend on what the manufacture's design is and you might what to contact them. Also adding what brand might help others with your question. Hope this helps.

Re: water inlet tube
Still wondering what pump, location, use, model and or manufacturer. Is this a deck pump an oil pump of some sort or a wind shield washer pump?SalmonAddict wrote:Well it's still stock cause I've never swapped it out yet.

My hose is stuck, can you help? I can pull it out and swing it around.

Re: water inlet tube
The only real test is when the motor is up to temp and the thermostat is open does it pee water out of the cooling system? If you have a good strong stream, it's good.

it don't pee, it just cries like 1 drop at a time. water is fairly hot too.Bodofish wrote:The only real test is when the motor is up to temp and the thermostat is open does it pee water out of the cooling system? If you have a good strong stream, it's good.
ive been told that regardless of the thermostat opening or not, it should still pee a stream...

Re: water inlet tube
Yep, right on that one. What happens when you disconnect the inlet tube on the thermostat?SalmonAddict wrote:it don't pee, it just cries like 1 drop at a time. water is fairly hot too.Bodofish wrote:The only real test is when the motor is up to temp and the thermostat is open does it pee water out of the cooling system? As a side note, all small OB are built with "tropical" thermostats. They open really fast and at low temp. It's not a bad idea to change it out to one for our region, the motor will warm up to operating temp a lot easier and you've gotten rid of one of the failure points. I guess what I'm saying is you need to find out where the water is being stopped if it's barely coming out.

Re: water inlet tube
That tube should no spin freely around should be a snug fit. I would say order a new tube and don't run it till that is fixed. Does your unit have the rubber inside the housing the tube goes into, if yes replace that as well. If not you made need a new housing.
Make sure that your pee tube is clear sometimes they get blocked follow it to the motor and disconnect it there and see if the water pressure is any better if yes replace the rubber hose and check the fittings make sure there not plugged.
Good idea on replacing the thermostat cheap and easy insurance.
Good luck let us know what you find.

Yes the housing has a rubber ring inside the housing where the tube goes. I just replaced the tube and ring. It's snug tight now.Hunter757 wrote:That tube should no spin freely around should be a snug fit. I would say order a new tube and don't run it till that is fixed. But still no stream coming out of pee hole. Still drips.
Took out thermostat with motor running to find barely any water making it out the thermostat housing.
Guess the problem is between copper water tube and thermostat
Re: water inlet tube
What did your old impeller look like? Have you change it out as well? Sometime the old one gets shredded and small pieces plug the pump up and tube blow air up the line to see if its clear.

Re: water inlet tube
Also check the inlet and make sure there is nothing blocking, try running the hose down the pick up tube and see if water flows out, you could do the same from the motor to check the tube if you have access?

Re: water inlet tube
Yeah the impeller was changed as well.
Nothing clogging the copper water tube either, I used coat hanger to check.
Attached hose and still no water making it thru. Water goes up copper tube and falls back down internal walls of driveshaft housing.
Hope there's no holes or bad gaskets, pretty tight spaced to tell and work with

Re: water inlet tube
What do the Mercury techs tell you about this? There's a 1-800 number in the manual and calls are free.
Re: water inlet tube
Back flush the motor. Sometimes grass and junk can get into the motor coolant passages, might have to flush the whole, thing. You do NOT want to be running the motor while back flushing.

Re: water inlet tube
Try removing the thermostat and then try running water up the tube. The tube might have a hole in it just not sure I understand the water going up the tube and falling back down...anyway you need a way for the water to escape, also after removing the thermostat you can back flush the motor that way via running a water hose in the hole and see what comes out the lower unit. Sometime when the motor is used in saltwater it will build up salt deposits clogging the passages. Keep looking you will find the problem. Keep us posted.

I took out thermostat and ran motor, no strong flow of water coming out.Hunter757 wrote:The tube might have a hole in it just not sure I understand the water going up the tube and falling back down...
What I meant is this:turn off motor, dropped lower unit attached hose to copper water tube, turned on hose, barely any water comes out of thermo housing. Water seems to go up copper water tube then fall back down the surrounding inside walls of drive driveshaft housing
Hope it's just a leaking copper water tube and not a bad gasket or bad connection.
I will try back flushing from thermo housing.
Re: water inlet tube
Ahh..got it. Time to find a blown up drawing of the motor and see how that tube attaches and see if you can remove it for inspection. Sounds like you on the right track.

Re: water inlet tube
upon research, i believe my gasket (number 14 on diagram) might be leaking where the gasket surrounds the copper water tube and powerhead connection.
ill removing powerhead this weekend and keep you guys all posted...
