I've been kicking around the idea of buying a bunch of size 1/0 or 2/0 gamakatsu heavy wire jig hooks (for salmon/steelhead) and selling them in packs of 100 for 20 bucks each. So I'm doing a little market research and was wondering if any of you jig makers would be interested in buying hooks from me at a significant discount. Joe's sells them for 36 cents each + tax, so even if I added a small shipping charge you'd still save about 40%. (Hooks don't weigh much, so shipping should be inexpensive.)
I'd have to get my IRS paperwork to be a wholesaler, and the minimum order gamakatsu will accept is 10,000 of each item.
I'm not sure if I can sell that many. Selling pre-poured jig heads is also an option. I've got lots of lead...
Wadaya think?

If you made the jigs, we'd be in business cause I'd be willing to buy from you. I need some bass jigs and some bigger 3 oz saltwater jigs (not sure what molds you have/dont have)
From the looks of your other lure making tutorials it seems like you make quality stuff though...

Your biggest competition will probably be from Captain Hook's discount warehouse.
They've got the best pricing I've seen for bulk orders.

BTW I am really cheap and looking for good pricing on size 1 and 1/0 siwash hooks (better pricing than Capn Hook).
Lemme know if you know of such a source.

Thanks for the link! I usually shop online at Stamina Inc, but from comparing prices, it looks like the best deal depends on which hook you're interested in.
For example:
The 2/0 gammy #604 is $34.90 / 100 at Capn Hook. Stamina lists them for $27.
But Capn Hook has better deals on Matzuo sickle hooks. The 2/0 red sickle at Stamina is $13 / 100. Capn Hook lists them for $6.40 -- less than half! WOW! I've been paying too much for sickle hooks...
Capn Hook also has better shipping rates than Stamina, but you have to buy $200 worth of stuff to get free shipping. At Stamina, shipping is free on any order of $100 or more.
I couldn't find any siwash hooks on Stamina. You could always email Paul and ask how much he can order them for. I had him order a do-it production mold that I couldn't find anywhere except the do-it website, and Paul saved me 25 bucks! :thumright

Holy crap! I checked the prices at Capn Hook for some of my favorite hooks (Mustad, VMC, etc), and I've been paying WAY too much. Thanks again for the link! When I need to order more hooks, I know where to go!

For the Matzuo sickle hooks, some are light wire; some are regular gauge; and some are the heavier gauge that a lot of salmon/steelhead fishers use. I have not been able to precisely determine from the Capn Hook site which ones are or are not heavy/regular gauge vs. light wire.
That might be why there is a difference in pricing... maybe the more expensive Matzuo sickles at other sites are heavy/regular gauge, and the ones at Capn hook for the same color are light wire?
Just thinking out loud..
