Tiger Trout

What are Tiger Trout ? I see the reports of them being planted in some lakes. I take it there are some kind of hybrid. How large do they get and are they aggresive like the triploids.

Tiger trout are a cross between brown trout and brook trout. They dont get too big, the record is 6lbs and some change. Taken from Lenice I believe, or Nunually. As far as them being aggresive, I wouldnt know. I have been trying to catch one for 2 years now and have came up empty handed. They are starting to plant them more and more, mostly fingerlings though. But they did plant catchables in a few grant county lakes just recently. They also planted a few 2 year fish in Dry lake in Chalan county.

I noticed they planted them in one of my favorite out of they way lakes, Cow lake. I will have to try it, but, I am concerned that cow lake may have been killed off when they killed off the fish in Sprague. The creek that runs out of Sprague runs into Cow, not that for down stream and Cow is a great varity lake, it has or had Channel cats, Bass, trout and the place I know where to go to get big Blue Gills.

I think that lake did get killed off with sprague. I am not too familiar with that area, but Yellowbear made a report of the sprague lake kill off, and I am pretty sure he mentioned cow was another lake that was effected from the sprague kill off

Thanks for the pic fishnislife. A little encouragement for me. I am giving them another shot this weekend. I have found quite a few lakes in a short distance where I am going with tigers. 1 of them just got 2,000 planted a couple weeks back. Hopefully this will be th weekend.

Take the camera man. I will say, I get a little disappointed when I read all of your quality reports and they lack pics. You catch a nice Tiger Trout and you will want to have a picture of it.

Thanks bro. Yeah I really need to catch a tiger. I also really need to learn how to submit photos. But I do have a digital camera now, still trying to work that too though. If I hook into a tiger I will get serious about submitting photos so you can check it out

The Columbia Basin hatchery planted 3 lakes a few weeks back in Grant County

When did they start this new fishery and planting them into the lakes. What lakes would have the oldest of these fish. I have been an advid fisherman for years, many years but I have been working all over the country fishing different places. These are a new one to me.

I really dont know when they started this up. If I were to guess I would say about 10 years or so. I know there are some real lunkers in Dusty lake (Grant County). Rumors say the state record is in there. Lake Lenice (Grant County) is where the state record was caught. But there is leterally no bank access on that lake you need a float tube, or a small boat. But it is a 1 mile hike in and a very nasty parking area. A lot of vehicle break ins in that parking lot. Dry lake (Chelan County) just got stocked with 2 year old tiger trout. But when I was there 2 years ago there was no bank access, so I dont know how you would fish it.

So back to the question about size and aggresiveness... I was told by a WDFW biologist that they plant the tigers because they are aggressive and will hit lures that a lot of trout normally wouldn't and they grow fast being a triploid fish. I have yet to hit a lake with them in it, but after seeing that picture I will this year for sure. Beautiful fish!

Being sterile the fish would be able to grow to great sizes, trophies should reach 25" in a couple years. The State record is only 1.89 and I can bet that this is a wild (natually occuring) Tiger Trout. Now that they are being stocked, this record should go down fairly quickly.

Most hybrid fish of any species tends to more aggressive than either of the two being mixed.

fishnislife, you know your my boy and I HATE to prove you wrong but, I think you are mistaking the tiger trout record with the golden trout record. The tiger trout reord is 6 and some change, from Lenice lake in Grant County but its hard for me to doubt you, so I could be wrong

Somthing tells me these are going to be a highly saught after fish, because, the record could be broken yearly along with there aggresiveness and beauty.
