I installed a new prop on my old trolling motor last year, and this is what I found wrapped around the drive shaft:

It's a good idea to remove your prop and check for debris at least once a year. Tangled line not only robs the motor of power, over time it can also eat the bushings and compromise the waterproof seal. If water gets inside the motor, it will be time to buy a new one... #-o

What a mess. I'm headed to the garage to check my prop after seeing this.

WOW thats alot of line. All that line wasn't visible while the prop was still installed?? I bet 25% power got you no where all last year. Good Tip for the beginner boaters !

Nope, nothing was visible with the prop installed because the line was wound very tightly around the shaft. What you see in the picture had to be pulled and cut to be removed. It took a while to get it all out. ](*,)

The motor ran quieter and had much more power once all of that crap was gone. The unnatural resistance was probably also causing the motor to run hotter than it normally would -- which will decrease its lifespan. :thumbdown

Its sad but a lot of fishermen just toss unwanted line overboard. This is a good example of what can happen when a prop and line tangle!

There is an attachment you can get for your trolling motor that makes it weedless by using a cutter near the hub that basically slices through anything that would tangle your prop. I bet that would eliminate all the line fouling also. It was in the BassProShops catalog
