Trophy Trout Poll question 2

Post by Mike Carey » Fri Apr 10, 2009 5:05 pm

Which of these do you feel would be an appropriate minimum size to keep?

Again westside lakes are primarily put and take. Only a few stockies successfully live long enough to overwinter in our westside lakes. Current policy (laymans perspective) is that the fish are planted large enough to not just be cormorant feed. There are again cost/value numbers here that come into play. Personal opinion here is that people want to catch lots of trout and would accept smaller fish size if they got to catch and retain a limit. I'll take a WAG at 7" to 10".

Depends on put and take vs. selective regs...

Going to be really hard to regulate minimum size though in put and take lakes...

A9 has got a good point....it would make sense, in my opinion, to attach minimum sizes to lakes according to their specific regs (as is already done). And an 8" trout with a treble bait hook halfway to it's stomach is a dead fish if an attempt is made to remove it. I like things the way they are right now.

I'll also add that if you take your kids fishing, they want to keep everything they catch. Although you don't have to do this, if they catch 6 fish, but can't keep any of them because none of them are big enough, then they get discouraged really quick. I would think there would have to be some places for youth fishing because of this that would allow them to take their "trophy's" home.

A 14 inch fish is a good one for the smoker. Bigger than that (for trout) is a little harder to smoke correctly.
