Ive gotten into a couple really dangerous situations trying to use assisted steering on a trolling motor, and have to say having BOTH is the way to go. In bigger water it can be a hassle hanging over the transom all day long, and in a river like the CR near Bonneville or the Deschutes/McKenzie/Snake/Rogue rivers, having instant full throttle bursts lock to lock on the steering is a good way to go.

Better just have both, a steering system (TR1, electric, manual off the main, etc) and a tiller handle that you can reach easily while in the rivers to cover your bases for safety.
