Harvest Time

Post by racfish » Fri Aug 06, 2010 5:25 am

My vegetable garden is finally producing. Its been a bad year for my tomatoes and fruit trees. My cucumbers are just kicking out in masses. These cool cloudy mornings dont help at all especially with my peppers and tomatoes.Even the farmers in Yakima are having a tough season.I know alot of y'all have gardens at home. Im curious to know if everyone is having the same type of season. Here was my yesterday picking. Cukes and Jalapenos

My tomtoes are just now starting to grow fruit, guess they are a bust this year. I planted bush beans and the plants are only about 10" high and have produced only about 7 beans so far, and my artichokes will not even grow. This was not the year for my veggie garden. Even the local produce store is bringing in stuff from out of state. So much for trying to save money growing my own.

Had my first edible strawberries about a week ago. They are now going full throttle and the 6 plants I have make me wish I had about 18, cuz I love making protien shakes with fresh strawberries instead of frozen.

Had our first two cherry tomatoes ready to eat yesterday. There are about 100+ more on the hanging tomatoe plant that are green. They'll do fine I think.

I had to replant my corn 4 times. The tallest one is about 2 foot right now.

I replanted my squash 3 times. There are 2 zuchini ready to be harvested this afternoon. The yellow squash should be ready this weekend or early next week.

Peas were planted EARLY, like March or April, and they went bonkers, putting out TONS. The cold didn't affect them at all. BUT, last week all the leaves turned white/powdery and something is killing them :-(

Carrots were planted in April and did fine in the cold, we've had a ton of those, my 6 year old has been eating them straight from the garden.

My lettuce should be ready next week.

My green beens had to be replanted 3-4 times, and they are still only a few inches tall, growing REALLY slow.

This weather pattern made things start late, but predictions show that the fall should be a bit warmer. I'm hoping my corn makes it in time. I love fresh silver queen straight from the garden.

Replanted corn 3 times and now only have 5 plants left and they are only a foot tall. I have always planted from seed. This is the first year that I bought tomatoes and basil to replace my seedlings. I have green fruit on the tomato plants and I am getting some basil.
2 plantings for zucchinis with no flowers yet. 2 plantings each for peas and beans. I have eaten fruit from them.
The slugs even got to the onions.

It hasn't been good for any one I have heard from. Weather, bugs, and animals.
Only things that grew good were carrots and potatoes.

I kind of look at it as this is the way of our Lord.In the Bible there is a time like this . Its every seventh year.So maybe this is it for us.When I cant figure it out and it seems strange like this year I just pray a lil harder for better seasons to come.

Mine is the same . My strawberries were great . They have never yeilded that many. My corn is a little slow but now it`s 5ft and going crazy. My zucs have been doing great from day one. My peas are going nuts and almost ready as my green beans and carrots and also pumpkins. Only thing I lost this year was okra and my jalapenos. Bell peppers are small but growing now so I don`t think they will make it before fall.

:-({|= :-({|= sad days indeed.... Before I had such a fishing habit I used to grow a lot of veggies. I don't know how you guys find the time with fishing also. There is nothing like seeing your crop come into shape. These days if I'm not at work, or with the wife/kids,, then I'm on the water or nothing else. I need to get more balanced,, and back to things like the garden..... just my rambling thoughts.

Glad to hear it's not just our garden! Seems like our cucumbers are the only things producing. Have had one strawberry reach ripeness. The rest never got past green. Still waiting on the pole beans to produce, no tomatoes yet, the radishes have great foliage, but little roots, and one little zucchini trying to grow....the basil is going like gangbusters though. We did get our garden started late though.

Gotta have pumpkins for the kiddos to carve. We have a contest and I usually lose. But it`s fun.

...Kiddos. I must be a 56 yo kiddo. I also grow pumpkins but they are for me and the neighbor kids to carve. Looks like I'll buy some this year.

Just for fun (actually because I was too lazy to dig up the garden) I hung 6 of those upside down growing Topsy Turvies from my upper deck. All I do is water them every day. I put 2 plant starts into each container. I just replanted sugar peas as the first 2 plants were finished producing. 2 containers were planted with zucchini and I'm picking every other day. The other 3 are growing a mix of cherry and early harvest tomatoes. I've been picking the cherry tomatoes for 2 weeks and it looks like I'll be putting bags of tomatoes and zukes on the neighbors porches in September. Of course if it gets damp and rainy and the tomatoes get the blight all bets are off.

Since were on the subject. This year was the first for us and peas. I have two rows which are doing excellent and growing up some chicken wire type fence. I`m curious when to harvest them. When are they done? What do they look like. There starting to look a little brown almost like there dying. Does this mean there done? The rest of the garden is doing fine. They just started turning brown a week ago and it`s not all of them.

Not really the vegetable variety, but my roses this year were pitiful. They developed powdery mildew and black spot. The spring was so wet and cold, they got hit hard. I got so disgusted with them I cut them all down to ground level in July. They are now starting to bloom and don't show any sign of disease. It has been a real hard year to grow thing.[mad]

To early for pumpkins to be done. I said I think the peas are done but this is our first year growing peas and I`m not sure what the finished product is supposed to look like on the plants. There real big but they keep growing. Don`t want to over do it and lose em.

My snow peas were taken out in end of june. It was a great pea season. I do both snow and Snaps.I like them lightly sauteed and eaten still crisp. If you guys get abundance of cukes ,I make sliced cucumbers in seasoned rice vinager. Its a very refreshing way to eat cukes. Makes a great picnic snack.

We ended up with some nice Zuccini that one of my grand daughters wants to enter into the NCW Fair here in Waterville towards the end of the month.
