Really Tired

Post by Lotech Joe » Wed Mar 23, 2011 5:15 am

I haven't heard from my On-Call job in almost 2 weeks now. I'm really tired of looking for work. Maybe something will happen today. Too many people only accept resumes and applications on line anymore. Very few accept walk in inquiries.

Thanks for putting up with me. I was just feeling the need to whine a little.
It's national chip & dip day today. Maybe that will help.

I think I'm on the same boat as you are on, the good news is it hasn't tried to go under the 520 bridge yet.

I feel for you Joe. The world had changed and the economy sucks. With what is going on right now, I sure hope things will get better soon, not worse.

Chips & dip didn't help.

Head over to employment security. They have workshops to help you write and get your resume in electronic format so you can apply for jobs. You can then broadcast them from your desk. You have the computer......... gotta do it.

It's not you, Joe. It is the "new norm". With the economy down as long as it has been, companies have laid off people and now they are finding out they can do fine with less people. They are also laying off people and then a short time later, hiring on someone to replace the person they laid off and pay them less without any benefits (sick leave, vacation, etc.). This is why the businesses want to do away with the unions. In a union shop, there has to be a good reason to fire or lay off a person. It's in the negotiated union contract. In a non-union shop, well, they just fire them. They don't have to have a reason, they just do it. It is all about balancing the books at the end of the month. It seems that employees are no longer an asset, they are a liability.

Over the last 14 years, I have worked hard to build strong relationships with retail sales people for referral work. It was a kind of partnership. They would send installations my way and I would send customers their way. All of the people that used to refer customers to me have been laid off. Once again, these people were replaced shortly afterwards with less pay and benefits. Basically all of my contacts are now unemployed. I walk into these retail stores and the sales people ask "Can I help you?". They don't even know me, even though I have installed thousands of square feet of tile for the store.

And for you and me, Joe, it is even harder. We are at retirement age. If any physical work is needed in a job, they won't even look at our resume because we are "too old". On every application that I have picked up lately, it has in bold print, An Equal Opportunity Employer. Ya, right.

If you need help putting a resume together, let me know. I just made mine up. I can also help you get it online if you like.

It's a different time now, Joe. Companies don't look at employees the same as they did "Back In The Day".

Call me.

Don't put your age in your resume. It's against the law for them to ask how old you are.

That is one way online applications and resumes can benefit us.

If online is the way of the world then there is no choice do it.

Hey Joe I work everyday except Saturdays. I havent recieved a paycheck for 2 paydays now. Ive been borrowing from my IRA to make house payments and paying bills. It really can be depressing. On weekends I find chores at home to keep me busy and not spend money unneededly.God willing things will turn around. I have a nice boat but cant afford the gas to put in it.I find myself selling my stuff around the house. Oh well at least Im alive.I used to look forward to retirement but not anymore. I cant afford retirement.

Hey Joe if it makes ya feel any better wish I`m sure it won`t:pale: I`m unemployed also. Just found out last Thursday. No notice just a sorry. Got this job back in September of last year. Thought it was where I was gonna retire. Think again. Before that it took 8 months to find a job. Here we are again and nothing lined up. Lot`s of experience just not that many jobs availible in my field. The local work source office does help alot. Not sure where your at but there`s one close I`m sure. They have individuals that will help with resume`s,resume classes and all the above. Weird how this happens right around bassn season. Unemployment helps but not paying all the bills that`s for sure. Hang in there it will get better.:salut:
