Floating Eggs on a Jighead

Post by AJFishdude » Mon Feb 17, 2014 9:35 pm

Hey everyone. When it comes to floating eggs under a bobber does anyone out there ever just take an empty jighead, secure their eggs to that, and then float it under the bobber? I tried this the other day on the Sky up at Reiter (although it was an actual jig, not just the jig head) and got a vicious strike, so it appears to work. I just wonder if the added weight on the eggs would cause the presentation to look too unnatural vs. just putting the eggs on a hook and leader with the weight further up the line, but still under a float.

I wouldn't suggest using eggs ( roe clusters /piece of salmon skein) on your jigs because for one the likely hood of the roe staying on the jig isn't very high even if its cured. The leader setup if you tie your hook with an egg loop you will have a knot/ loop that secures your eggs ( helps in heavy current to stay secure to the hook and in certain casting situations) and as well as hides your hook in the eggs better if done correctly. The leader set up with a couple feet to the weight allows for the eggs the roam freely around the strike zone. If i was you and wanted to use eggs and a jig i would soak my jigs in the salmon egg juices (scent) for a while you will find that gives you longer lasting scent and a better quality presentation OR you might look into X Factor egg clusters and just add scent.. Another option.. Scent is whats key in this situation (in my opinion) not the physical eggs.

To each his own. [cool]

Thanks for the response. I have no problem going with the standard egg loop and weight back up the line setup, it just seemed like the jighead approach was a decent idea and a way to make the terminal tackle a little more simple. I definitely did know right off the bat that not having an egg loop to help secure the cluster would probably give me issues.

I like to use bait band jigs for kings. Its a regular jig with a small dental rubber band that you use to secure the eggs onto the jig. Works great for me

Always worked for me too. I've used 1/32 oz jigs with a couple salmon eggs or a piece of worm under a bobber for trout, works just fine.

Wrap some of those eggs up in a spawn sack, doesn't need to be very big. Jigs are normally a visual bite so mass amount of scent isn't needed in most cases. Or dry your eggs out a little longer and they might last a few casts before falling off.

I have caught s@#tloads of Salmon on jigs with eggs or shrimp. I have caught a Steelhead that way to.......
I like to dry some eggs more than others so when I cast long distance they stay on the hook, dryer eggs on jig is a good lure

Good tips on letting the eggs get dryer for staying on the hook longer. Thanks.

I always keep any loose eggs after curing and use those on my jigs. Like strider mentioned, let em dry until firm to the touch. Or in a pinch use green label Pautzke eggs.
