No doubt nate. And im not excusing what he is doing in any way. Just trying to explain its a whole different way of thinking. Fishing isnt for fun, fish are a source of income. It is sad that people who we are told revere nature have devolved to this. But when people talk about beating kids [and I know youre not serious] or saying he is obviously a victim of abuse it really pisses me off. Believe it or not there are alot of really good natives out there who are trying to reconnect with their roots and take care of our resource. And no they dont ALL beat their kids

So you're supporting beating kids to within an inch of their life? I'm surprised no one has said anything yet about that over the top remark.
I'm guessing (I hope) that he intended the remark in this manner:

hy·per·bo·le
[hahy-pur-buh-lee] Show IPA

noun Rhetoric .
1.
obvious and intentional exaggeration.

2.
an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

No doubt. That's a big word Mike, I don't think that I can talk that good.

It's "talk that well". Good is used as an adjective, well as an adverb. As in:

"she was pleased to hear the good news"
"the whole team played well"

Class dismissed. [tongue]

Irony (from Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία (eirōneía), meaning "dissimulation, feigned ignorance"[1]), in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event characterized by an incongruity, or contrast, between what the expectations of a situation are and what is really the case, with a third element, that defines that what is really the case is ironic because of the situation that led to it.

i cant believe i even need to respond to this. if people in your world solve things by beating others then i feel sorry for you. and for you to think that a person you have never met and know nothing about would resort to that then shame on you. making that asinine of an assumption is an insult to me. thanks.

I wasn't the one that said it. Just trying to clarify what you posted. If there a smiley associated with it it might have been taken as something else but it did appear to be a pretty plain statement.

My favorite part of this discussion are the haters. These same haters of children go buy fireworks every year around the 4th of July.Or dine on lavish seafood dinners at the Native casinos. Or the chronic or just for fun gamblers at the casinos. We support all these things ,yet when a kid is caught snagging its such a bad thing. You guys crack me up/

This video is from the skokomish river. Right below the spawning grounds on purdy cutoff.
such a waste of life. a long journey for the chum to only end up being snagged. killed and wasted

You talk about this because its at the hatchery mouth. what about all of us who line up on the Cascade or Wallace fishing right up to the hatchery areas,or the folks who catch spawning sockeye all the way at Lk Wenatchee. Are we any better then that kid. Do you realize the hardships of salmon migrating up to Lk Wenatchee? Nobody feels sorry for those fish. What about 1000 guys fishing in front of the Reiter Hatchery on the Sky? All of a sudden fisherpeople change their tunes. Like I said earlier. Its always different when its a non native person fishing.

I feel for every fish landed, kept or released. There are times when I release ocean going fish, not because I have to, because I want to. One time fishing on the Columbia, I landed a hatchery steelhead near Ringold. Nice fish, probably 10lbs or so, that had a gash from a seal or something. As I tailed the fish and looked at in the water I thought about what it had gone through to get here, many miles from salt. I removed the hook and let it finish it's journey, felt like the right thing to do.

I have the utmost respect for the privilege of meeting my prey while fishing. What bothers me is disrespecting mother nature and the rules that most of us follow. Only issue I have with the kid is the method when he can catch the same fish without ripping trebles into their side. I do not see a native American, I see a poacher that needs to be punished, regardless of race.

I love fishing at hatchery intakes and spawning grounds, that is where the largest concentration of fish are! If you feel sorry for fish why would you even go fishing? I would never snag fish like this kid in the video because it is illegal, but you can bet that I use every advantage possible to bring in as many fish as I can while I am out there!

Don't know if this was directed at a specific poster or just a general observation added to the thread, either way I have to respectfully disagree with trying to equate the behavior in this video with anglers fishing similar terminal areas legitimately. Fishing terminal areas may give an angler an unfair advantage in targeting fish (doesn't seem to for me, lol) but they still have to entice them to bite an offering if fishing legitimately. If you're against terminal area fishing that's cool but don't use it to excuse the blatant abuse shown in this video. I agree there are areas of "moral relativism" in fishing but this isn't one of them for me, what the kid is doing is wrong. Period. And no, I'm not any "better" than that kid, but am better than that behavior and so is he if someone would teach him the right way.

seems like these terminal areas attract questionable anglers and tactics.

In my limited experience I'd have to admit you're right in this observation but I still saw people fishing legit every time I've gone. They shouldn't be lumped in with the snaggers.

Im not lumping everyone together at all. Its like what everyone says about the legal way to fish. We as non natives follow the rules for the most part because they are our rules made for non native fishing. The natives have their own set of rules that are made for them. Is this kid breaking tribal laws or is he breaking our laws that might not pertain to him and his people. Im not picking on anyone in particular but if anyone calls me on that then look in the mirror and ask youself about your ethics. I dont condone Netting or non native purse seiners or snaggers. I say get rid of them all. After fighting to make changes year after year and getting nowhere it dosent pay to me to fight this anymore. I guess my question is "was this kid breaking tribal law?"
