Hey racfish, have you ever tried to substitute rice for maggots while targeting other species? When I go for crappie that is my favorie bait to tip my jig with. When the fishing is good you can go through 3 jars of maggots a day, well thats an extra $20 for the weekend. And plus they dont sell maggots at most places.

I do use rice.I havent tried it for kokes or crappie. It works for the whitefish,so I cant believe it wouldnt work for other spieces as well.I met a guy who fished the mouth of the Raging river years ago who taught me this.Even back then maggots were kinda expensive.
Now you can always harvest your own maggots but it can get stinky and grotesque.Get a slab of meat or road kill and let the maggots grow there.Hehehe.At that point I prefer to buy them.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I'm new to whitefishing, and bait fishing in general, and so I was wondering about the maggots. Do wax worms work too? Or is it just 'maggots'? Are wax worms maggots? They all kind'a look alike to me... And do they need to be live maggots, or do perseved ones work? I live on a whitefish only river, so I really want to start making the most out of it before March 31.

Any help is appreiciated.

Im no expert on the Whitefish by any means but I think a Whitefish will pretty much hit anything from small spinners to eggs.I dont think they are real particular in their feeding habits.I dont see why artificials wouldnt work.I mentioned maggots cuz thats what I used in the past. They are gross lil buggers but no worse then leeches in the mid west.

I have picked them up as bycatch in Lake Spokane (Long Lake) on 2" suspending rapalas.
