Just Cant Wait...

Post by FishBaitThe2nd » Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:47 pm

Still over a month away, but i just cant wait until August 1st. Now im a little confused with the regs for the skokomish this year, but ill figure them out eventualy. Im already buying gear, buying a new rod on monday, for the past year ive been collecting tons of aluminum cans to take and cash in for money to buy a new reel so i got just about enough for that now. I live about a mile away from Scott Mclendons Hardware an when i walk to town ill buy some yarn, or a pack of hooks, or something to use. Im collecting little by little. I cant wait for these fall chinook, id like to go out for summer steelies but i need someone to show me how to fish for these. Ive been thinking of new ways to catch fish at the skok, and i think they will be very productive. I dont care what people say about the skok, it can be a zoo, it can be a snagfest, and sometimes you just cant find a spot. But im the youngest, regular fisherman, in the hole that i fish, everybody knows me by my first name so i get respect and i give respect. People often think im alot older cause of the ability that i have to catch these fish and how i get along with people there. My season is getting cut short, cause high school football practice starts on august 15t, during spring training the coaches said im on varsity as a freshman. So, im pretty busy but im still going out fishing before practice. I cant wait, fishing is my drug ! Im using a casting set-up this year, so its going to be a little different for me, every day for the past couple months ive been thinking and remembering about that diving, hard pulling, fight that a king gives me, and the bright, chrome, jumping and dancing silvers. I have a goal of to catch 50 kings this year out of the skok, im alot better then i use to be , im out there atleast 6 days a week. Im hoping ill be able to do it, i just cant wait... some call it an obsession... [flapper]

6 days a week and you could not catch 50 kings last year?!? I went 7 times last summer total and hooked 56 kings. I am 16 and caught my first king there when I was ten and hooked one before that when I was really young with a push button rod. A lot of the people reconize me there just becauce last year I was saying fish on every 5 minutes. Unfortunatly my spot appeared to have changed a bit so this year might be a different story.
I can relate to that addiction, Silvers on the quilcene or steelhead on the cascade get my blood pumping and heart racing.

I might have caughten 50 last year, if i didnt i was pretty close. Last season was my first season that i was catching kings on a regular basis, i didnt count though. The season before, i had only caught 2 or 3 kings and that was it.
So this year im going to count and see how many i can catch. Im like you, i hooked my first one at the skok when i was 10, although i didnt yell "fish on" i yelled "grandma i got one" lolol

Skok is my favorite river to fish, and I think the hatchery does a great job of managing their runs. Not only do fishermen pull fish outta there by the hundreds, but the natives also get their fill of fish. Yeah sometimes its a zoo but Ive never met a problem person there, and I am super excited for the opening! But it isnt til August 10th this year. I havent seen anything about them opening and closing the upper and lower sections of the river for the nets. So im thinking fishermen might be more spread out this year. Mind if I ask what your go to skok method is? Ive only had luck with eggs and plunking spin and glows.

Kinda makes me mad that they arent opening it up till the 10th, it gets a huge run of fish so idk why there starting it later this year. But my method starting at about 11 30 in the morning ill use either charteuse yarn , or black yarn with a small orange corky. In the mornings i use eggs, this year im going to try something different but im going to keep that to myself so I can see how well it works [flapper] lol i really hope they change the opening to the 1st. ill email them and find out why

I fish the dusk bite, crazy good fishing. 2 years ago me my dad were the only people fishing up until the night closesure and almost limited out everytime but last year people started to catch on and began to draw quite a crowd. I normally start fishing around 2-4pm using either a 5ft flourocarbon leader, green scalesparkle corky w/ green yarn. Or a short 3ft leader, white, black, purple, or green yarn w/ or w/o a orange/red bead. If crowds are small, I will long drift a whole stick of pencil leade, 4ft leader yarn and eggs.
I am going to try float fishing this year though.

My first king down there was a CHROME 14lb buck. First time ever using a bait caster that day as well and hook two only landing the one though. Nice river with lots of fish and only 45-60 minutes away

Yeah im excited to start using a baitcaster, the dusk bite is the best i totally agree with that. Last season, i got my first first cast fish ever there, it was awesome lol. I use 3/4 oz cannon balls, i use to use pencil lead but it would drift to fast and get in everybody elses gear. Downfall about cannonballs are when they comeback and hit you in the leg, the stomach, or even worse your fishin rod. Which hole do you fish? Maybe we can meet up there sometime this season. I live in belfair, ill be attending NMHS next year.

I live in bremerton and I fish the log jam hole/s curves where you walk in at the locked gate to camp up purdy ck rd and walk down the road it is the first hole on the left. Best hole ever been fishing it since I started fishing the skok and know it like the back of my hand.
Yeah I have been nailed on my jaw and my knee cap before with my stupid cannonball. i just started using cannonballs 2 years ago and like how they cast and drop faster than lead.

I think we fish the same hole , lol. The hole where theres the cliff, and guys casting toward one another? Thats where im at every day. i was only in the water twice last season. the first time cause i was walking on the logs, had a nice chrome male buck on my line was walking back to pull it into the net and i fell in a hole between the logs in about 5 feet of water. hit the bottom bounced back up but never once let go of my rod ! the 2nd time my line snapped and the top half of my rod went in the water lol

yeah those logs are sketchy but my dad collects like 1000 corkies each time by digging around in them. I cross the river and fish the other side in the bottom portion but I found this pocket last year that held atleast 100 fish every outing.

Sounds like u guys r getting ready for some big kings already. Skok reminds me of the samish. U guys shouldnt be giving away your spots! Lol I have some private land i got permission to fish the samish a few years ago. Me and the people I take are the only ones allowed in. 5 holes, hundreds and hundreds of kings in each hole, fish till ur arms get tired. No pressure up there either so they bite SO well on eggs. Get away from da jig flossers down low..

Yeah id love to be like you guys and be able to drive everywhere and catch fish all the time. Id keep my holes a secret but its just well right there everybody knows about it already lol or this has happened all the time numerous people will walk by me and say "hey your the kid from washingtonlakes catch kings all the time" or "hey fishbait" ](*,) i know one hole that no one , that i have seen there ever at the skok, its full of kings everytime ive been there but only accessible at low tide. I love fishing the skok catchin numerous kings a day, most averaging 14-18 pounds. I only caught 4 over 20 last year. You guys catch many 30+ . My biggest is 28. last year was my first year that i was catching kings like i was. I have a new set up that im going to try this year, that i think will be very good for bigger kings and even silvers when they come in. Im also going to keep it more on the downlow and not post every fish i catch, only the bigger ones or the more interesting ones to catch. Like when i fell in last year lol id love to fish the samish sometime. and i have to wait till august 10th this year for the skok [crying] cant wait till i have a car and am old enough to drive

yea man im 19 now, but before i could drive i didnt really catch anything, a few steel in local creeks n stuff. Once i got a car i was slaying everywhere, finding places people will never know about, like i went from catching 6-10 steelhead a year to 181. Ha you will be slaying like us when you can drive! YEa we get a lot of big ones, but its cause we catch so many that eventually ur gonna hit a monster. We probably landed like 500 kings between 3 people last year, and got 3 over 40 pounds, idk how many over 30 probably like 50. I love using eggs, watching them grab it and watch the juice squirt out of their gills as they chew. SO cool! Like i said, they bite great cause nobody fishes the area, we catch a lot of darkies, but always go home with chrome

yeah if there wasnt so much pressure on the skok id be fishin eggs or shrimp all day.uid love to fish other places but the skok is a 30-40 minute drive, i know how to fish it successfully so i go there, joke around with my buddies and have a good time. theres just so many people throwin cannonballs at them all day they get pretty spooky after abotu 11,so you cant fish eggs all day. but i still get my fish. Maybe ill fish with you guys sometime this year,

Samish is awesome, I will probly be fishing it more this year as I am moving from kitsap to northern Seattle. Spent a lot of time exploring the river and making friends with the farmers last year, but the kings hadnt made it up far enough. We were seeing one fish here and there. Not too many secrets on the skok since its only about 2miles of fishable water. Prediction of 30,000+ Skokomish kings this year! Do you guys buy the hunterfarms key? If you do is it worth it? Maybe I will see you guys on the river this August.
