Black Lake is a lightly fished Gem in the Pasayten Wilderness about 25 miles N.of Winthrop Wa. See Delorme Wash. State Atlas and Gazetteer p.113, grid B7.The roads are paved nearly to the trailhead w/about 3mi.good gravel. The trail is well maintained and very moderate, but no water that I would drink so take plenty. The lake is full of RB that go to 16",but most 10-11'. It also has Bull Trout (Dolly Varden) which must be released (on the endangered list.) There are no Brook Trout, so don't mistake the dollies for brook. I was getting skunked pulling various small nymphs on a wet cell II. There were so many fish rising in the crystal clear lake I decided I might be fishing below them. So I switched to the dry line
and light tippet casting a griffiths gnat in #16 & 18. That works as would any small midge or emerger. The fish were very surface feed oriented both days, so I'm not sure what else might work. Didn't catch any dollies. The lake is very pretty and has several nice spots along the trail that follows the E. shore all along the lake. I think the lake is all native from natural spawn, so keep a couple for dinner and putthe rest back. July 10-11-00 Ron S
