This spidery lake of more than 1,600 acres is located just west of Highway 101. There is a public boat ramp on the north end of the lake about nine miles north of Reedsport. Most of the bank fishing possibilities on Tahkenitch involve fishing along the road that travels along the south end of the lake eventually reaching Five Mile Arm, the lake's largest arm. Tahkenitch Lake's largemouth bass fishery has suffered somewhat in recent years, although some good catches are occasionally made. In recent years, the bass population has rebounded due to improved spawning success. The lake has produced bass to at least ten pounds. Yellow perch, bluegills and black crappie are also common in the lake and there are fair numbers of brown bullheads along with a very few yellow bullheads and warmouths present. A number of years ago, Tahkenitch also had a population of smallmouth bass which has long since disappeared. In addition to small runs of coho salmon, steelhead and searun cutthroats, there are some nice-sized native cutthroat trout as well as some planted rainbows. P Heley
