Vancouver Island Outlook

by Adrian O'Connor, Reel Obsession Sport Fishing, January 21, 2016

Happy New Year everyone. I hope everybody had a great holiday season with family and friends. I was fortunate enough to spend the holidays in northern Alberta with family. We made it up to Jasper for a ski and snowboard session, shot the guns at some targets, and got out on the ice for some rainbow trout fishing. Below is my daughter Kenzie with her prized trout.

2016 is ramping up to be another great year for fishing on Vancouver Island. Winter Salmon fishing is off to a terrific start. There are lots of fish showing up around Victoria and Sooke right now. Most fish are in the 6 to 12-pound range, however fish up to 20lbs have been caught. Whirl Bay, Beecher bay, Constance bank and even Victoria’s inner harbour have been producing great results. Anchovies, Sitka spoons and small coyote spoons have been working well.

Halibut fishing is closed for the month of January and expected to open again for February 1st. You can’t beat the weather and the fishing that Victoria has to offer in the late winter and spring. Halibut tides are limited by the strong currents we have in the Juan De Fuca straight, so drop me a line so I can let you know what days are best.

I have recently purchased a new boat for the fleet. It is a 25-foot pursuit. Pursuits are known worldwide to be one of the smoothest riding and well-built hull designs. This is going to be an amazing guide boat. It has all the comforts you would expect from one of our vessels and has an extra-large fishing platform. As we speak, a new 300HP Mercury Verado is being installed on it.

The salmon outlook for 2016 looks promising. We are expecting similar returns to 2015. This past season saw above average catches throughout the entire summer. We experienced incredible fishing just minutes from the lodge in July and August. Offshore saw non-stop action during the entire charter season. If 2016 ends up as predicted, it will be another banner year.

Tuna, Tuna, Tuna! I get more and more calls and bookings every year about this exciting fishery. We will be offering this thrilling offshore adventure from August 18th until September 12th. This coming summer Reel Obsession Sport Fishing will be one of the hosts for the 2016 Esperanza Tuna shootout. It is going to take place August 26th-29th and the entry fee is only $500 per boat. There will be cash prizes along with some amazing sponsors. Give me a call to get more information on this event.

This is going to be my 16th year offering world-class fishing adventures on Vancouver Island. My staff and I have a proven track record of putting you on the fish, showing you warm west coast hospitality, and most of all, providing a fun, safe fishing excursion. Drop me a line or give me a call anytime to discuss.
