I was wondering how you rig your tackle and leader for the dick nite in this kind of tidewater. it was lights out a couple of years ago when i discovered spoon drifting, but this year i haven't landed a single fish on the dick nite despite some encouragement from an old timer a couple weeks back who was limiting when everyone else was still rubbing shrimp oil in their eyes. he recommended a three way snap swivel with 1/4 ounce pencil lead and a 3' leader. granted he was fishing frog water near the 522 bridge, before the rains, but he cast, let the spoon drop, slow reeled and hooked up faster than the midnight cowboy! i've heard tell of the 50/50 and nickel arrangements.. but i've fished spoons near the cady park upper train trestle, in the middle of schools, and haven't seen so much as a bite. in 2013 the frog color and 50/50 killed it on certain deep bowls downriver from the 522 bridge which don't really exist in drought conditions. i was using a sliding weight on a swivel above my leader.. i think there's something squirrely with my setup. any rigging advice? thanks!

I use a similar set as the old timer in the upper river; in gravel beds/bar areas. The set up I use in the lower river is an in-line sinker(yesterday was 1/2 oz) with a 4' leader(fluorocarbon) to a wee dick nite in pink and white. My experience is that they will hit many dick nites, silver, 50/50 green, frog, brass. I think the biggest part is being able to feel the soft bite and set the hook. I used no scent yesterday.

9/2/2015 11:05:00 AMThanks, strider. I'm a habitual prowler of these forums but a first-time poster. It's gratifying getting a response so quickly.. not sure why I hadn't posted earlier. There's a lot of pride invested in fishing on one's own terms, working a mistake 5 hours to net a single fish just to "prove I was right about that one"! :) But even a stubborn fool needs good advice from time to time. I'm assuming you put a bead between your sinker and swivel on the main line, right? I'm looking forward to dipping back into my stockpile of wee spoons!
