What a great evening! The wind was blowing like crazy across the last most of the afternoon and evening. I only found active fish in the north end of the lake. The south end was dead. Caught first little muskie at 3pm on a small black spinnerbait. He looked to be last years plant, only 22 inches long. Released him and made another pass through the area. Caught the second muskie out of a submerged tree along shore. He was about 30 inches and quick released himself while I was getting my glove on, no pics. The third muskie hit a perch pattern, jointed Rapala twitched across the weeds at about 7pm ( just at moon rise ). He was released healthy as well. Again, the pics are from a camera phone, sorry. I'm buying a proper camera soon though.
I've been fortunate this early season having caught 6 ( and lost 2 ) muskies since the 15th at Silver Lake. This lake is a great place to take a beginner to catch their first musky. Find weeds is 3-4 feet of water and you should find fish. One sure way to boat them out here is small lures. These little guys do not prefer the larger baits I use at Newman, Cerlew and Mayfield. When I find a larger fish out here I switch to another heavier pole and larger bait. But the medium action casting gear I've been using makes these smaller fish a lot of fun to catch. Please release all muskies so they can grow up. Also, call fish and game. Tell them how much you enjoy catching and fishing for muskies, more positive response means more fish planted and in more lakes.
