After a chilly night at Steamboat Rock state park I and a fellow Vietnam Vet decided we'd try Banks for a few hours. We figured; no matter what the outcome this would be a most fitting Veteran's Day for us. We launched at the park launch, the water was extremely low and the Lund 1800 barely slid in. Using a pole to push out we were able to lower the big motor. While doing this we noticed numerous silvers spawning right at the edge of the ramp. Getting out into the the main lake was much more painstaking than usual. Finally we were able to open 'er up and head for the Wall and the Million Dollar Mile. A cold north wind had kicked up and the whitecaps mounted. Water temp around 49 degrees. One thing about a big water boat is that rough water isn't a overwhelming criteria, even though launching is a little more painstaking.
Soon our efforts were rewarded and we picked up some nice 'bows.
On the way home I stopped at Big Wally's to say hi to Gordon.
He said that there was work going on at the dam, hence the low water level, but it's rumored to be coming up soon.
As I write this I'd like to acknowledge Gary Carter, a Vietnam Vet who, recently passed away at age 53, far too early. But though the wars may end the health battles often rage on.
Good luck to all and especially to all my fellow Veterans. Life is precious.
