Some people release all fish regardless of planters or not... a released planter is next year's Hold Over. Thanks for the report, sounds like a good time.

3/27/2008 11:30:00 AMI try to release all the planters i can, but its very hard if they swollow a hook. I heard that hooks dissolve after a couple days, so i just cut the line. lose a hook, but oh well.

3/27/2008 1:04:00 PMAll fish caught using bait must be kept as per Washington State regulations. Check the reg's. If you catch a fish using bait, if it is legal to be kept it must be kept. Not doing so is breaking the law. I have called and reported this behavior before and seen citations issued. If you want to catch and release then do so, just use no bait and barbless hooks.

I don't think so. Where in the regs does it say that? I see that itsays all fish caught with bait count towards your limit, but I do not see where it says you must keep them and not release them. From the regs on trout:
"In lakes, ponds, and reservoirs: No min. size. Daily limit 5. When fishing with bait, all TROUT (except STEELHEAD) equal to or greater than the minimum size are counted as part of the daily limit whether kept or released."
This seems to imply you have the option to release bait-caught trout. No?

3/27/2008 2:19:00 PMYeah the fish caught on bait can be released but they do count towards your limit. I would not start "reporting" people unless you know the rules yourself.
I think what Bob is talking about is that it does not make much sense to release a fish if it is going to die anyway.
I don't think a released planter is necessarily next years holdover. Even by chance if it is not caught, most lowland lakes the survival rate is pretty low.

3/27/2008 3:45:00 PMI do know of someone at Bitter lake the other day releasing fish..... he is a 50 year experienced fly fisherman who uses barbless hooks and never touches the fish or take them out of the water.... Yes, all bait caught fish must be kept.....

3/27/2008 5:04:00 PMFirst of all gpc, you aren't supposed to use and bait really at except for worms. You do not have to retain fish caught on bait. Reporting people isn't always the brainiest thing to do if you yourself are not following the correct rules and guidelines.

3/27/2008 5:25:00 PMI usually dont keep my trouts. I just fish for fun. Occasionally, I'll get a really deep hook, or a bleeder. I may keep those, if it seems to weaken the fish severly. But if they are still very aggressive, I'll let them go. If the fish does die, it will not go to waste. Something will eat it.
