Fished Amber in the afternoon to early evening. Partly cloudy with a decent Northeasterly blowing. Fished Olive Woolly Bugger for hour and a half with no results. Switched to a damsel nymph and had no luck either. Not much surface action but saw quite a few large rusty colored chironamids coming to the surface. Decided to switch to a size 12 red-butt chironamid fished on a 15 foot leader with 6x tippet. This I fished on a sink tip line so the fly could get down deep. I used a slow retrieval. (This is a method I had used and learned while fishing in the Kamloops area of B.C. Often works in the spring and autumn if there are no fish working the surface and no larger patterns are catching fish.) Anyway for the remaining hour I caught four 15 inch rainbows and had a few more hits using this method. I had been frustrated a few more times here at Amber in the past using just Woolly Buggers and not really trying anything different. On this day the method above seemed to work well for me.
