Well...I guess Bruce M. was right in his summary that less fishing pressure could produce some whoppers in Square lake over the next few years. I was there last night in my kayak and though I did catch a couple of the resident 6 to 8" bass, I also managed to boat a 5 1/2 pounder, by far the largest fish I've seen in this lake. I was casting my favorite 6" black trick worm around the beaver dam down the bank from the boat launch and had just caught an 8 incher. I cast over to the other side and got a couple more little bites that didn't result in a hook up. I cast in one more time and felt the tap and set the hook. It automatically felt like a better fish, but I didn't know how much better until she started stripping drag and making a run for the lilypads. My kayak was perpendicular to the fight and was getting pulled thru the lilypads sideways. I had to pull out my paddle and follow her thru the pads and ended up pulling in my line hand-over-hand to get myself up next to her as I was using only 8lb line on a spinning rig. I could still feel her on there and saw her back break the water a few times as I got close and got my thumb in her mouth. Very nice, fat, and healthy fish. She had a round shaped scar on her right gill cover about the size of a quarter, but other than that she was beautiful. I weighed her on my Boga Grip (5 and a little over a half pounds) and quickly released her to fight again. I had one other dink earlier on a Rapala Minnow too, but that was the excitement for the evening. Unfortunately, I left the camera at home so there's no proof, other than the scars on the PALM of my hand. That should say something in itself.

Sounds like a fun catch! Great description!
It is always fun and rewarding if there are a few more "hoops" to jump through to get to the prize! And then, when you release the fish and watch it swim away you think to yourself "that was awsome, but nobody is going to believe it!"
