3/26/2009 7:45:00 PMI think because of all the runoff starting early, we stand a much better shot at seeing some Crappie since they can move up on their beds about 3 months earlier than last year....

3/27/2009 9:51:00 AMWould you know at what temp the Crappie move in to spawn? I fished yesterday near the Wheat Field acroos from Felton's. No bites. I was told to float a white jig under a bobber and did just that. I typically like to cast a feather jig and have had some success with huge crappie in the past but no quantities. If you know the secret I would be glad to share the back seat of my bass boat with you sometime.

3/27/2009 9:55:00 AMScott, its early yet. I don't think its so much temp as it is turbidity. Crappie aren't going to be using sight to go after prey right now thanks to all the muck in the water. You will definitely have to use something that stinks and try to draw them in with that.

3/27/2009 10:31:00 AMGisteppo is dead on, your offering is not wrong, it is the location of the fish right now, and how they feed. In Midwestern States, and the Eastern side of Colorado, we use to use live minnows to catch the crappie in these conditions. IF you find them, they are tightly schooled. But, being we cannot use live minnows, you would be best to try something like the Burkley Gulp baits that have more scent. Good luck, and I think I will wait for a couple of weeks.

3/27/2009 4:10:00 PMThanks for the info and yes I do have a white aluminum starcraft with a 90 Merc. on it. I dont recall seeing any other boats on the water though. I launch a Lakeridge Park. Where do you put in at?

3/28/2009 9:50:00 PMAnglinarcher. You are so right about those gulp minnows for crappie. I use the 2 1/2" smelt minnows on either a 1/16th oz foxie jighead or a little tough guy gitzit shad jighead for Crappie. Last Thursday, a couple of friends and I caught close to a 100 crappie out of the I-82 ponds near Zilla,(by Yakima.) Conditions were just about perfect, with water clarity, cloud cover, structure and depth all coming together for some fast early season Crappie action. The Berkley old style 2" micro minnows are so effective on crappie that I could of sold a million of them. The only thing is they're discontinued now! These minnows I make by using dye and sharpies are the next best thing to real minnows. They are incredibly realistic. I'll include pictures of the jigs and the fish in my next report.
