Fished lake Samish today, I was going to do some yard work and relocate rod holders on the boat but…I am addicted to fishing and the nice weather pushed me over the edge. I had the boat hooked up and we were on the way by about 9:00. I think that we were on the water around 9:30.

It was a beautiful day with very little wind. The water temperature was hovering around 51 degrees and small fish were jumping all over the lake. We had decided that the jumpers were planters but later were proven wrong. The game plan was to fish for big cutthroat. We trolled various sizes and colors of wooly buggers on one rod and various bait/spoon combos on the other. We varied the depth from flat lining to about 80’ on the downrigger. We fished most of the east shore and the north end of the lake. We did try to target the creek mouths but fished everywhere in between as well. Our game plan to catch cutts was not a good one, the final score was cutts 0…but there is more to the story.

On the way in we figured that small planter trout would be better than nothing. So we rigged up a brass and pink dick night on one rod and a wedding band flasher combo on the other. We ran the dick night off the downrigger at 10’ and the flasher combo on lead line at 1 color. Long story short, the rigger goes off and up comes a very nice fat kokanee. I think that I should have revised the game plan earlier, turned out that the jumpers were probably kokanee. It was a great way to end an otherwise slow day.
