We went to Deer on Saturday and most of the Lake was still iced over. The Narrows was the only part that was open. We launched the small boat (private launch) and started trolling about noon. There were 4 others out there and about 10 bank (dock) fishermen. The water temperature was only 38 degrees. Marked lots of fish but was hard getting them to hit anything. We got taps on spoons and a "Glow" J plug. They would strike it and then swim away. It was a beautiful day on the water and was pretty cool fishing the edge of the ice floes. We watched a guy "plow" his way through the ice fronm the public launch. Must have been tough on the boat as he was probably doing 10 to 15mph. We will give it a couple of weeks and try again.

Glad to hear that the narrows has thawed out. That's my favorite fishing spot on Deer Lake. When the water warms up a bit - you can catch some monster "Bows" off the net pens in those narrows. Thanks for the report Augwen. You wanna do some mack fishing with me up their - I should have my boat in the water in about 1-2 weeks. I've never gone for macks before and could use an experienced fishing partner. Mike

I have fished Deer for a few years hitting the Macks. I would love to teach you my tricks (even if they do not always work). I am leaving for a two week trip but will be back at Deer fishing on the weekend of May 9th. Look for the 1956 Crestliner that looks like a Hewescraft. It will be docked about half way down the Narrows on the North side. I am always up for fishing.
