Lake Chelan remains very consistent for laketrout and That occational Chinook Bite..I have been trolling Herring for the Chinook the first 1 to 2 hours at first light and the last 2 hours of light in the evening to be most productive on these "Gems" of our Lake Chelan.

Laketrout bites have been coming off the Ace Hi-Fly in Green spatterback by Silverhorde tipping the hook with a strip of either River Sucker or Pike minnow.

I have read a couple latest reports about the concern of Burbot in Lake Chelan..
With what I know is that this last Year the Local Biologist in the fall was at Stehiken where he set a net trap to capture Kokanee at and around the mouth of the Stehekin River for spawning purposes but the Kokanee seemed to out smart him but the Burbot did not..He said that all he could catch in the net was Burbot and the numbers that he was catching was exciting to him. So my theory on this is that Burbot have been in Lake Chelan for a long long time way before Laketrout and other species that were introduced, and now that the population of laketrout and Salmon and other species are doing well in the lower Lake the Burbot had to change there location to survive..I have caught good numbers of Burbot in the upper reaches of Lake Chelan. Hope this helps for those that want to Venture to the upper Lake Chelan..

Thanks to all that fished with me this last week.

Hi Joe. It's Scott.

It looks like there are quite a few Chinook in Lk Chelan. Are the numbers growing? Why? Is it the resource (Shrimp and Kokanee) that are helping their #s? Is this a hatchery thing?

Also, Knowing that you work in the fisheries field, I wanted to get your opinion on a bacteria or parasite I have seen on Kokanee that I've caught out of Lake Sammamish. There seems to be lesions on the fish with brownish wormy looking parasites. I noticed the Kokanee have been jumping and breaching on the top of the surface as if they were trying to get rid of an itch or get away from a fish. Ithought this was unusual. The Kokanee of Lake Sammammish are large 15" or so and there aren't a whole lot of "HUGE" fish that would chase them in the middle of the lake. Would you know what this bacteria is and if it will kill the fish? As you may or may not know, the Lake Sammamish Kokanee is an Endangered Specie and protected. This year there seems to be lots of them which I thought was encouraging, but I am discouraged by seeing the parasites. Also, last year, I caught several Sea Lamphrey like fish in LK Sammamish. I wanted to show WDFW the eels, but they managed to fall through my Live well plug hole. I meant to close it. I felt terrible about that. Are Lamphreys a problem or perhaps a cause of this Kokanee problem?

On another note, I'd like to come up and tangle with "Walter" of Rufus Woods which you fought a couple weeks ago.. Is the fishing good there right now?

As always, I look forward to hearing from you Joe! thanks for your reports.

Scott there is a few Parasites that can irritate the fish...We have a lake here Roses Lake that the trout get raspberry disease that they get these red blotchy spots on them...They act the same as your koks are doing..Then there is another which fish in fish tanks get Ich..I would contact the wdfw and let them know about what you are seeing...maybe take a fish to regoinal office..Pathologist would really like to look at what it is...

I have got to thank the WDFW for the numbers of Chinook that we are catching now...Triploid Chinook Program started 5 yrs ago and now we are seeing the results...and boy do these fish battle...

Thanks Joe, if I can catch another one of those Kokanee I'll try and keep it alive and show the WDFW. That's awesome about the Chinook fishery on Chelan. I hope you continue to catch fish like that for a long time. I'll call you soon to schedule another trip for those Chelan Lakers and Rufus Woods.
