PIcked up fellow walakes angler, "Datsun", Michael,, drove to Lake Cavanaugh. I got a fast limit here just last week. We lauched at about 9:45. I told him it would be quick... Michael dropped the flasher and gold blade spinner with attached fly,, down to about 20' on the DR. He sat down in the chair, and I said, "Fish on Dude"
We left with or limit of 5 fish a piece. We were targeting the kokes. This lake is such an easy lake to fish for kokanee. I know most people like to not oversell a lake in hopes of not having to many people come to it,, but I'd sure like to see a few of the skagit county koke anglers check this place out. Besides the take home limit, we probably released 6-8 fish which were small like 8-9".
The keepers were 12" and firm meaty. Also caught about 5 trout of which I assumed were rainbows. It would seem obvious what a rainbow looks like,, but I hear people talk about cutthroat in the lake. These fish had the black spot style of the cutts. from lake washington. They had no cut on the throat, which doesn't always indicate it's not a cutthroat. They also had very sharp teeth on the tongue and front of the jaw area. The black spotted pattern made me want to call them cutts.
Anyway...
fish caught anywhere from 10' to 45' in usually 60' of water.
chrome flashers, inline gold spoon with flasher
chrome flasher with what I think is called a "Promise keeper" spinner.
best fished at 1.5 mph on the electric, but also caught fish at 2.2 mph on the merc.
Windy, rainy, sunny, etc.

Also saw some crawfish pots were out on the lake.

Nice catch, report and great pictures. Those koks look nice and fat. The other makes me think of the kind of fish that could be hiding in there.

No, sorry about the deceiving picture of the water. That was a pic. of the outlet stream from a nearby lake which I explored for a later return trip in my float tube.

Hey, what kinda DR's you use ? I have Scotty's for the sound on the sled, would they work for trout ? How much LB. balls you use.

Are Kokanee fast growers? That would be great. So far the larger fish have been 12-13". I did lose on at the boat that I thought may have been bigger. I am now trying to explore fishing deeper in hopes of finding bigger fish.

I keep meaning to congratulate you on your recent Cavanough catch, sooo...congratulations! Excellent limit of kokanee. Lake Cavanough is one of my favorite. A little secret (OK not for much longer) In 2009 the WDFW planted 16,000 cutthroat fry for this years fishery. We have also caught an number of rainbow trout/cut-bows/cutthroat in Cavanough that I was not sure which they were.

Reply for Jimbo - I have Scotty downriggers and run 14 pound balls in the sound. I use the same for kokanee... I change the releases out. I took some Cannon light (white) releases and cut the 7-8 inch stock cable off them and put about a 3 foot one on. If you tighten up the line on the pole so that the release is at an angle (not straight out), you can see a 5-6 incher hit pretty easily. I also bought a Sep's release this year and love it... I've had a number of kokes at Lake Stevens pull it off the clip and come to the surface! One other thing I do when the water depth will allow it is I run the release clips above the ball on the cable, rather than attached to the ball... In Lake Stevens I run them 10 feet up... in the clear water of Lake Chelan I run them 30 feet up when I can...
