Spent a couple hours on American Lake with my daughter in tow. The weather was nice: sunny, mid-40's, slight breeze. We tried a new spot, mainly because it offered some play area for my daughter. It was fairly shallow and I didn't have much hope for catching any trout but I was dead wrong. My daughter hauled in, after a lot of work, this 4.5 lb, 23 in. rainbow. Shortly after this photo I brought in a 5.5 lb, 26 in. rainbow. Not bad for shore fishing with a little power bait. We released the larger trout and took the smaller home for dinner. A good day fishing and my daughter got in some good play time too!

I have found out that sometimes, when bait conditions are just right, the biggest trouts are in the shallowest waters, around 3 to 4 feet only. It needs to have bait fish around though, but these are willing biters because they are hunting...

Yep, when the weather is cold, you can find trout looking for food in the shallows, a few hours after the sun has warmed things up a bit. Nice fishin, and even better with the kiddo.

There is no secret honey hole for bank fishing AL. You just get lucky sometimes with the big 'uns cruising around for food. The lake is not stocked by WDFW, Bill's Boathouse stocks the lake with 3000 1+ pounders annually if memory serves.

WDFW does stock large numbers of trout fry in American(they planted over 500,000 last year), I belive mostly as food for the birds of prey. And Ft Lewis also has net pens at their marina, where they raise about 30-40,000 fish each year. American can definitely put our some fat rainbows, and often when you least expect it.

We were fishing at the military end of the lake, on the northwest bank just above Russell Landing. There is a shallow cove with play areas between the lake and the housing area.
