Hit American Sunday. Launched around 1100. Windy and cold, water Temp 44-46. Didn't think we would catch anything, I was throwing a white curly tail with white jig head, and the wife puts on a hot pink curly tail with black jig head. I laughed at the color, as did my daughter. Well the joke was on us, as the wife caught the only fish. A 23" 5.5ish pound bow (my scale is old). She made sure to tell us how good of a fisher she is all the way home. I don't think, even after all my years in Alaska, that I have ever caught a rainbow with the girth this fish had. Can someone tell me, is this the infamous triploid? This fish had some serious shoulders on it.

We've caught quite a few trips over the years, don't think it's a trip, doesn't have that classic "football "shape, but that is ONE FAT FISH!Congrats to your wife, Bob r

Most definitely a trip...u can tell by the tail being all beat up, it happens when the fish are in the net pens. Congrats to you bro, the wife thinks she hooked a great fish, but I bet now she's the one hooked!

You can also tell when you cleaned it. If it had 2 huge, long white 'fat' sacs running the lenght of the gut, then it's a trip. No reproductive organs. Looks like a trip to me.

Stocking records for the state of WA. for 2009, 2010 shows NO stocked triploids in American Lake. Split tail fins are not tell tales for trips as all pen raised fish will show this. Just sayin, facts are in the state website.Still a great fish. Bob R

I doubt it's a trip, most likely what we would call a "brood stock" at Beaver, though they are not released at American. However, brood stock are nothing else than regular bows 3 to 5 years old that were used in hatchery for breeding, so I would say that she simply found a fish that had been around for a long time and avoiding being caught for at least 3 years... all the more reasons to congratulate her, she caught what no other managed, a very finicky and smart fish.

It's a typical American Lake trout. They are generally fat once they reach 20+ inches on that lake. They are raised in net pens by Bill's Boathouse and released in the late spring / early summer when they are over 12 inches so the bass don't gobble them up. Last I checked, Bill's releases 3000 of them a year. Raised in net pens, but not triploids.

The Internet reports do not account for what private clubs and organizations put into lakes. Also from what I understand from a conversation with a trout truck driver last year at a local lake not all triploids are raised in net pens. It depends on the hatchery. There is also a couple private companies that sell fish for stocking too

The army base also raises fish in their pens to stock in the lake, and I dont believe any of them are trips either. The state mostly just stocks fry every other year in American, so I would agree that it's most likely just a good holdover from years past. American will put out some monster rainbows.
