5-8-11 Took a buddy of mine and bass fishing rookie from work over to the Potholes Reservoir for a couple days of fishing. Water temps when we arrived at 10am were in the low to mid 50's, we tried around the WDFW launch area just outside the Lind Coulee arm, and down the Dam wall but couldn't find a fish...except for the 18lb carp I tail hooked on a crankbait on 12lb test! Got it to the boat after about 5 minutes, but it finally came unhooked when I was going to grab it. After getting checked in at Mardon Resort and getting our bags and extra gear off the boat, we headed back out on the State Park side this time. We fished just outside the dunes for about 2 hours and caught 1 small smallmouth about 1.5lbs. in 8-9 feet of water. Water temps here were in the upper 50's. I decided to run around the back of the dunes looking for warmer water, but the only thing back there were CARP by the hundreds, spawning! We headed back to Mardon after stopping by and marking a waypoint on the entrance to the Winchester Wasteway for the morning.

5-9-11 Launched around 7am and again started in front of the State Park, didn't touch a fish here until nearly 10am. Ran back to Winchester and was rewarded with the first largemouth of the trip, a 5.4lber out from under a tree in the Wasteway! (No I'm not angry in the pic, just wasn't ready) Fished our way back out of there for about two hours, then took a break for lunch. After lunch we decided to focus on the State Park area as this was where the warmest water was, in fact it had climbed into the low 60's by the late afternoon. We boated 4 more smallies here the biggest being 3.5lbs, and one more 3.2lb largemouth, but that was it. Fished until about 9pm. The next day would be spent trout fishing...as promised. There was definately algae remnants in the big lake, but it was managable.

Nice report, and good fishing man! Any word on the walleye? The habitat enhancement program is a great idea and will help the lake on many levels. The only bad thing I have noticed is the increase in carp and bullhead. Bullhead arnt as much of a concern as the carp, to me. But now its hard for me to go to Potholes Reservoir, and not catch a a couple carp, where it use to be maybe we would catch 1 a season. When they are spawning that is one of the most unbelievable sights that I have every seen, its almost creepy. You defiantly feel, that YOU are in THEIR world, when you find yourself on their spawning beads.

Didn't touch a walleye, had one make a swipe at my lure at the boat, but he was small and missed. As for the carp, I agree, they are out of control over there! I would love to take my AR-15 over there next year and "thin the herd"! Saw one guy bowfishing for them waaay bake in the dunes near the dyke, I never wished another "angler" so much luck in my life...
